The old man tilted his head.

“Partly.”

“You said this was karate.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

Tyler looked at Daniel.

Daniel shrugged.

“You challenged him.”

Tyler’s pride had reached the point where stopping would now feel worse than losing.

That is the dangerous moment in any fight.

Not when someone becomes angry.

When they become more afraid of embarrassment than consequence.

Tyler raised his hands again.

“Again.”

The old man shook his head.

“You already got your demonstration.”

“No.”

Tyler pointed.

“You caught me off guard.”

The old man looked toward the timer.

“Fourteen seconds left.”

Several students laughed.

Tyler’s face burned.

“Start it again.”

Daniel said:

“No.”

Tyler turned.

“What?”

“You said thirty seconds.”

Daniel showed the phone.

“Fourteen remaining.”

Tyler stared.

Then looked back at the old man.

“Fine.”

He rushed in.

This time there was nothing playful about it.

A hard right hand.

The old man slipped outside.

Tyler followed with a left hook.

The old man covered and stepped inward.

His shoulder touched Tyler’s chest.

One hand controlled the upper arm.

The other pressed lightly behind Tyler’s shoulder.

Tyler tried to muscle through.

Wrong choice.

The old man changed direction.

Tyler’s own strength carried him forward.

His foot crossed.

His hips twisted.

And suddenly he was bent at the waist with his arm trapped against his own body.

Not painfully.

Yet.

0:22.

Tyler tried to pull free.

Nothing.

The old man spoke quietly.

“Relax.”

Tyler grunted.

“Let go.”

“You’re pulling against yourself.”

“Let go.”

“You can step out.”

Tyler tried.

The old man shifted half an inch.

Tyler froze.

A tiny amount of pressure appeared in his shoulder.

His eyes widened.

Then the pressure disappeared.

The old man had released it intentionally.

“Feel that?”

Tyler said nothing.

“That was the warning.”

The room was silent.

Tyler yanked harder.

The old man turned his wrist.

Tyler dropped to one knee.

Not because he was forced violently.

Because every other direction had become worse.

0:27.

Someone whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Tyler heard it.

His humiliation became rage.

He suddenly abandoned the arm and drove forward with his shoulder.

The old man let him.

That was the trap.

Tyler expected resistance.

Instead he found empty space.

His momentum carried him past.

A foot hooked his ankle.

A hand touched the back of his shoulder.

The floor came up.

Tyler landed on both hands and one knee.

Before he could turn, the old man controlled one wrist.

Tyler twisted.

The old man moved with him.

Tyler tried standing.

His own arm folded behind him.

Not high.

Not dangerous.

Just controlled.

0:31.

Daniel lowered the phone slightly.

“Time.”

The old man immediately let go.

He stepped away.

It should have ended there.

It did not.

Tyler stood breathing heavily.

“Again.”

Daniel walked onto the mat.

“No.”

“I wasn't ready.”

“You had thirty seconds.”

“He didn't fight.”

The old man looked at him.

Tyler pointed.

“You kept moving and grabbing.”

The old man blinked.

“Yes.”

“That’s not fighting.”

One of the students looked down to hide a smile.

Tyler saw it.

“Fine.”

He looked at the old man.

“Actual sparring.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“No.”

Tyler moved around him.

“Unless he’s scared.”

That was the sentence Tyler regretted most later.
