At the foot of the north wall, Eli found an old maintenance platform built from boards that matched the ones behind the clubhouse. It looked undisturbed at first glance, but Mara saw a narrow stripe of fresh dust along one edge where the surrounding floor was dark. She crouched beside it and studied the markings without touching the panel.

"Someone's been here recently," she said.

Ronan looked at her. "Same person?"

"Possibly. We don't know yet."

She asked Cutter to open the maintenance access cautiously while everyone else stood clear. He moved the cover enough for Mara to shine a flashlight into the space beyond. A narrow concrete passage extended north beneath the hillside. The old plans showed it ending at a service shaft, but the opening had been altered. New conduit ran along the wall toward a gray control box farther inside, its indicator pulsing in the darkness.

Eli recognized the housing immediately. It matched the modern equipment in the hidden room.

"Don't send anybody down there," he said.

Mara lowered her flashlight and looked at him. "What do you see?"

"The same kind of control box. Somebody knew about this corridor, too."

The storage room was quiet enough for Eli to hear his own breathing. He had not entered the passage, and he did not know exactly what the box did. Still, there was something chilling about finding another piece of new machinery exactly where an old escape route should have been. The people who had altered the building had not overlooked the corridor. They had made it part of their work.

Ronan stepped back. "Nobody uses this route until emergency services have inspected it. We go with the windows."

Garrett came in from the hallway and caught the end of the instruction. "The windows are ready to clear. We can start with the first group."

"Do it," Ronan said. "Mara, supervise the order. Cutter, stay with the people who need help. I'll keep track of the numbers."

The men moved immediately. Eli remained behind with Mara for another moment, looking at the old drawings and the altered access. The plans indicated that the corridor should have connected to a vertical service shaft beyond the hill, the sort of secondary route an industrial shelter might once have needed. A useful escape path, if it still existed. A dangerous unknown, if somebody had compromised it.

"I thought I'd found a better way out," he admitted.

"You found an option," Mara said. "Then you noticed something that made the option unsafe. That's not failure. That's what assessment is."

They were turning to leave when Cutter called from the hallway. One of the windows had been opened, and cold air was moving freely into the main room. Eli smelled wet leaves and rain. For the first time in nearly an hour, the outside world felt close enough to reach.

Mara went to help the evacuation. Ronan asked Eli to stay where the adults could see him and assist only by explaining what he had observed on the plans. He obeyed for several minutes, long enough to watch the first group of members leave through a cleared window under the supervision of people positioned inside and outside.
