“She speaks for Malik.”

That was another important distinction.

Aisha took over.

“No further custodial questioning.”

Voss nodded.

“Understood.”

“I want access to my client.”

“You’ll have it.”

“I also want medical evaluation documented before anything else.”

“We’re arranging it.”

“Good.”

She looked toward Desmond.

“You two stay here.”

Nadia frowned.

“I’m a trauma nurse.”

“And you’re his mother.”

Aisha softened.

“If Malik asks for you, I’ll get you.”

Then she followed Voss through the secure door.

Malik was sitting with his arms folded when the door opened.

He looked up.

Aisha entered.

He knew her.

“Aunt Aisha?”

Not technically his aunt.

Close enough.

His face changed instantly.

“Hey, baby.”

She sat across from him.

“Your parents are outside.”

“Mom too?”

“Yes.”

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

Malik released a breath that sounded like he had been holding it for hours.

Aisha studied his cheek.

“Does your head hurt?”

“A little.”

“Dizzy?”

“No.”

“Nauseous?”

“No.”

“Wrists?”

“They hurt.”

She nodded.

“Medical staff are coming.”

Then:

“Tell me only what happened during arrest and questioning. Don’t tell me what you think happened with the watch yet.”

Malik nodded.

He explained.

Classroom.

Grabbed arm.

Whiteboard.

Hallway.

Cuffs.

Car door.

Questions.

Drexler offering a confession as though he could guarantee a reduced outcome.

His request for counsel.

Aisha listened.

When he finished, she asked:

“Did Officer Lang touch you?”

“He helped cuff me.”

“Hard?”

“Not like Drexler.”

“Did he say anything?”

“Mostly nothing.”

“Okay.”

A paramedic assigned to the precinct evaluated Malik.

Nadia was eventually allowed inside with Aisha present.

The second she saw her son, maternal restraint almost vanished.

His cheek was swollen.

Redness and early bruising marked his wrists.

“Oh, Malik.”

“I’m okay.”

“No, you are not.”

She stopped herself.

Then shifted into clinical mode.

“Any double vision?”

“No.”

“Headache?”

“Little.”

“Neck pain?”

“No.”

Aisha watched.

The paramedic recommended further evaluation at the hospital because of the facial impact and headache.

Voss agreed.

That moved the case in a direction nobody expected.

Once Malik requested counsel and the reported injury became documented, the urgency to keep interrogating him disappeared.

Now the urgent question was whether probable cause actually supported continuing to hold him.

Voss began reviewing the file.

The case looked thinner on paper than it had sounded at school.

A watch was reported stolen by Bryce Langford.

School staff searched lockers after Bryce said Malik had been “acting suspicious.”

The watch was recovered from Malik’s gym locker.

Bryce provided a statement saying Malik had looked at the watch repeatedly that morning and passed through the gym hallway during class.

That was almost the entire case.
