He glanced at the other passengers. Their eyes were fixed on the ticket in his hand. Julian seemed to understand that he had reached a decision point, and he made the worst possible choice. He tore the paper across the center.

The sound was surprisingly loud. Two ragged pieces hung from his fingers. He tore one again and let the scraps fall beside Maya's shoes.

Dana gasped. Jordan's phone remained raised. Elena gripped the edge of the counter so tightly that the tips of her fingers whitened.

"There," Julian said, more loudly than necessary. "Now we can stop arguing about a piece of paper."

"Destroying the paper didn't change the reservation," Maya replied.

His eyes narrowed. "You have no access as far as I'm concerned."

Brooke stepped toward the chair beside Maya and seized the black leather bag by its handle. "Security can inspect this," she said. She dropped it onto the floor, where it struck the stone with a dull sound. A slim notebook slid partway out of an outer pocket.

Maya stood then, not to threaten anyone but because she was no longer willing to remain seated while people handled her belongings. She reached for the bag. "Do not touch my property again."

Brooke retreated half a step. Julian moved in front of her, placing himself between Maya and the exit.

"You are making this worse for yourself," he said.

"No," Maya answered. "You're making it worse for everyone in this room."

Julian went to the counter and used the desk telephone to request airport-contracted security assistance. His report identified a suspected unauthorized guest refusing a management directive. He did not mention the green admission scan, the insult, or the fact that he'd torn a valid boarding pass. When Elena quietly said the system still showed the guest as admitted, he told her to add a security flag to the reservation instead.

"I can't enter fraud without a basis," Elena whispered.

"I am your basis," Julian said.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. The screen still displayed a green check beside Maya's name. Elena felt a pulse in her throat. She could refuse, and she might lose her job. She could comply, and she would be altering a record she knew was accurate. She left the field untouched.

At the window table, Maya retrieved her bag. Jordan and Dana were still watching. Maya noticed the frightened clerk, the unmodified screen, and the passengers beginning to speak on her behalf. She also noticed that some people who had laughed earlier were now staring at their laps, unwilling to be recorded as part of the crowd that approved.

She had enough information.

She took out her phone. Julian immediately turned from the counter, suspicious of even that small action. Vanessa crossed her arms and called the phone call a bluff. Maya ignored them, selected Rachel Bennett's secure contact, and spoke the words Julian had overheard a few minutes earlier.

"Rachel. Initiate the incident protocol. Preserve the lounge footage and notify legal. I need an immediate operational review."
