Not because Julian was powerful.

Because both potential sources of leverage had suddenly refused his framing.

Darius looked at Julian.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

“I assumed it was a canceled allocation.”

Darius nodded.

“That’s what I expected.”

Julian turned toward Caleb.

“I’m sorry.”

Caleb shook his head.

“You didn’t do anything.”

“I was standing beside your car.”

“You were told it was available.”

Julian gave him a small nod.

That exchange mattered.

Grant seemed to realize it too.

He changed tactics.

“Mr. Whitmore, this can be resolved immediately.”

Darius looked at him.

“How?”

“We complete your original transaction.”

“That is not a resolution.”

Grant blinked.

“You came here for the vehicle.”

“My son came here for the vehicle.”

“And he can have it.”

Darius’s voice remained calm.

“He already could.”

Grant opened his mouth.

Darius raised one finger.

“I want the complete status history preserved.”

Grant’s face changed.

“Excuse me?”

“The original sales file.”

“The secondary worksheet.”

“The user audit showing who changed the VIN allocation and when.”

“All internal messages concerning this vehicle.”

“Security footage for the delivery period.”

“CRM notes.”

“Pricing approvals.”

“Everything.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“That information is proprietary.”

“Then preserve it.”

“I’m not asking you to give it to me now.”

Grant looked toward Maya.

Then back at Darius.

“This is becoming unnecessarily adversarial.”

Darius almost smiled.

“No.”

“It became adversarial when you accepted money on an assigned vehicle and created a second sales worksheet because someone richer walked in.”

Grant looked offended.

“You don’t know our internal circumstances.”

“I know your system says my son’s delivery became a management hold at 10:46 under your credentials.”

That silenced the showroom.

Grant’s eyes shifted to Maya.

She did not look away.

Darius noticed.

So did Caleb.

Grant said:

“Who provided you with internal records?”

Darius’s voice cooled.

“Careful.”

The single word stopped him.

Darius continued.

“You are not going to retaliate against an employee because your own records contradict your explanation.”

“I did not say that.”

“Good.”

Julian stepped beside Darius.

“Darius.”

Grant finally processed the familiarity.

Darius looked at him.

Julian gave him an expression that asked whether he wanted his title disclosed.

Darius shook his head almost imperceptibly.

Not yet.

Grant noticed anyway.

“Do you two know each other?”

Julian answered.

“Yes.”

Grant waited.

No one elaborated.

His uncertainty grew.

Finally he asked Darius directly.

“Who exactly are you?”

Darius looked at Caleb.

His son gave a small shrug.

The moment had arrived.

Darius did not enjoy it.

He had never liked revelations whose impact depended on hierarchy.

But withholding the answer now would become theatrical in its own way.

“My name is Darius Whitmore.”

Grant’s face remained blank.

Then Julian added quietly:

“Whitmore Capital Group.”

The effect was immediate.
