"Are you hurt? "No. "Have they charged you? "Not with anything they can explain. I need you to preserve this call log and every public video from Kingsley Boulevard this afternoon."
Eleanor asked who had stopped her, and Maya named Sheriff Raymond Hale, Officer Travis Mercer, and Officer Noah Bennett. She described the matching documents, the handcuffs, the recording-system upload, and the tow truck that appeared before Mercer had finished the detention paperwork. Eleanor repeated the details aloud as she wrote them down, then asked, "Do they know who you are? "No," Maya said.
"And I do not want you telling them yet. "Maya, you understand what that decision may cost you? "I do. Please let me finish this the right way."
Sheriff Hale entered the interview room several minutes after the call. He carried a manila folder and wore the expression of a man prepared to offer a favor that was not really a favor. He sat opposite Maya and spread a printed form across the table. "I believe we can make this unfortunate misunderstanding go away," he said. "Sign the release agreement, pay the administrative charges, and we can expedite the motorcycle review."
Maya read the numbers carefully. The total was more than six times the ordinary towing rate published on the county's public schedule, broken into line items for specialized transport, secure storage, premium handling, expedited verification, and administrative processing. "Why is there a valuation-based charge?" she asked. "High-value vehicles require additional care," Hale replied.
"Was that care authorized before or after you established a legal reason to take the vehicle? He folded his hands. "These are standard county procedures."
"How long does it take to challenge the charges?" she asked. "Several weeks, depending on the docket." "Do storage fees continue during that time?" "Yes." Maya studied the form again, then set it down carefully. "So the cost of contesting the seizure increases every day the county keeps the motorcycle, even if the owner eventually proves there was no basis to take it."
Hale regarded her with new suspicion. "Are you a lawyer? "My occupation doesn't change the meaning of these figures. "You have the option to resolve this now.
"By paying money I don't owe and signing a statement that says the seizure was proper. "By accepting the county's normal process," Hale corrected. Maya folded the agreement once along its existing crease and returned it to him. "I won't sign it."
"That may extend the hold," Hale warned. "I understand exactly what you're offering," Maya replied. He closed the folder, stood, and straightened his shirt as though the meeting had been a minor inconvenience. At the door he paused long enough to say she might reconsider before leaving. Maya did not answer, and after he was gone, she looked at the empty chair across from her and imagined how convincing the offer might have sounded to someone who needed a vehicle to get to work the next morning.
At 4:06 p.m., a desk officer returned her license and said she was free to leave. No theft report number had appeared; no criminal charge was entered; the Ducati remained in Kingsley Towing's custody. Outside, the afternoon sun was still bright, and people moved along the sidewalk carrying shopping bags and cups of coffee, unaware of what had happened a few miles away. Maya waited beside a planter until the car service she had ordered pulled up. She thanked the driver and sat quietly in the back seat as they headed toward home.
