Special Agent Rebecca Lane did not step forward dramatically or raise her voice over the station's public-address system. She approached Ryan and Kevin with two colleagues and asked them to identify themselves, while airport police maintained space between the interview group and the passengers still crossing the concourse. The men's surprise had already made the situation tense enough without an audience. Lane explained that investigators were executing properly authorized judicial process related to suspected financial fraud and false business records, and she asked them to listen carefully before speaking further.
Ryan attempted to address Vivian instead of Lane. "This is a misunderstanding inside a private company," he said. "Mr. Cole is upset about his ticket, and now everyone is acting like we committed a crime." Lane replied that the investigation had begun before the day's boarding dispute and that she was not at the airport to settle a personal disagreement between an owner and his managers. She told him his legal rights would be respected and that he should direct questions about the criminal case to investigators or counsel, not to an elderly customer he had just tried to intimidate.
Kevin looked at Arthur and said, "I didn't steal anything. Ryan told me what to do." Ryan rounded on him with an expression of disbelief, and the two men began speaking over each other until Lane instructed them to stop. The moment was ugly but not decisive; accusations made in panic were not automatically proof of guilt. The evidence against them would have to establish transactions, knowledge, authorization, and intent, and Lane had spent months making sure her team was not relying on the words of one frightened employee.
A second investigator, Special Agent Aaron Mills, explained that the team had obtained warrants relating to specific accounts and documents and that certain persons were being taken into custody under warrants issued following the investigation. Ryan and Kevin were told the grounds for the action without being invited to debate the underlying evidence in the corridor. Kevin began to shake and asked whether he could call his wife; Mills answered that he would have the opportunity to request counsel and make permitted calls under established procedures. Ryan looked toward the executive offices, searching for somebody who might contradict what he had just heard, and found no one willing to do so.
Arthur said nothing during the arrests. He stood beside Vivian with his hands clasped and watched two people whose decisions had harmed dozens of passengers lose the ability to define what happened next. He remembered his own mistakes as a young manager, times he had threatened to fire people for delays he didn't understand and times Helen had stopped him from acting. The memory did not excuse the conduct in front of him, but it kept him from enjoying the spectacle of two frightened men being escorted through an airport they once controlled.
