He stood in the middle of Thunder Ridge Customs with a folded photo trembling in his hands and he told a room full of enormous hardened men about the worst day of his life and about the woman who'd walked into the middle of it and dragged him out. I was 19, he said. First deployment I got separated in the confusion. I still don't totally know how it happened so fast. One minute I was with my guys and the next I was just gone, turned around and everything was coming apart around me.

His voice shook, but he kept going because he'd waited 3 years to say this and he wasn't going to stop now. And I remember thinking real clear, real calm, almost peaceful. I remember thinking, "This is it.

This is where I die. 19 years old and this is the whole thing." And I made my peace with it. I actually made my peace with it right there.

The garage was dead silent. Even the compressor in the corner seemed to have gone quiet. And then somebody grabbed me, Daniel said. Out of nowhere, this hand just grabbed the back of my vest and hauled me up. And I looked back and it was her. He pointed at Emily, who was standing very still by the parts room door with her arms wrapped around herself.

And I found out later. I didn't know it then, but I found out later that they told her to stand down. Command told her not to come. It was too hot. The odds were bad.

They weren't going to risk more people for one guy who was probably already gone. They told her no.

His face crumpled and she came anyway on a leg that was already torn up from getting the vehicle running. She came anyway and she found me and she got me out. And she never once in 3 years I never once found any record of her telling a single soul what she did. Like it didn't count. Like it wasn't even a thing worth mentioning.

Cody had turned away and was pretending very hard to be interested in a toolbox. Reese was staring at the floor and Marcus Marcus had his cap off and was holding it against his chest like he was standing at a funeral which in a way he was a funeral for the version of Emily he'd invented a year ago and carried around in his head the small version the parts girl version the version that was dying right now in front of him as the real one stood revealed.

I've got a wife Daniel said I've got a house I've got a job I love and I've got a little girl. She's two. He had to stop and get himself together before he could say the last of it. And every bit of that, all of it only exists because a woman I'd never met decided I was worth disobeying an order for. So I named my daughter after her, Emily.

And I've spent 3 years trying to track down where the real Emily ended up because I had to look her in the eye and tell her thank you. And I had to tell her that the thing she thinks didn't count, it counted more than anything anybody has ever done for me in my entire life.
