“Look at me.” Agrippa said. Trent turned back, a sneer plastered on his face. “I am asking you as a father to walk away.” Agrippa said. It was a genuine plea. Agrippa knew what was hiding in his own muscle memory. He knew the violence he was capable of, and he dreaded waking it up. He hated the paperwork. He hated the police questions. And most of all, he hated the idea of Larry seeing it. But Trent misunderstood the plea for cowardice.

“Fuck you and your ugly kid.” Trent spat. Then, Trent made the mistake that ended the negotiation. He reached out and shoved Agrippa hard in the center of his chest. Agrippa didn’t stumble. He simply absorbed the kinetic energy, his weight instantly shifting backward onto his rear foot, loading the spring. The cynical audience of the world knows how this usually goes. The loudmouth pushes the quiet guy. The quiet guy takes it. The loudmouth walks away feeling like a king. But the world had just walked into Agrippa Fisher’s cage. And the cage door just locked.

Time dilated. It didn’t slow down for Agrippa. His mind simply sped up, processing data at a rate honed by a decade of professional combat. Trent’s shove left him off balance, his weight pitched entirely forward onto his front foot, his chin hanging out over his knee. His hands were dropping back to his waist, completely abandoning his guard. He was structurally compromised. Agrippa didn’t feel anger. Anger made you sloppy. Anger made you swing wide and breathe heavy. Agrippa felt cold. He felt the familiar clinical detachment of a mechanic looking at a broken engine.

Before Trent could regain his posture from the shove, Agrippa moved. He didn’t throw a haymaker. He didn’t wind up. He merely pivoted his hips, transferring the power from the ground through his core, and into a short, devastatingly crisp right cross. The punch traveled exactly 8 inches. It connected with the sweet spot on Trent’s jaw, right on the button, transferring maximum kinetic force through the bone and into the vestibular system of the inner ear. The sound was sharp and terrible, like a heavy wooden bat striking a wet sandbag. Trent’s brain bounced against the inside of his skull. The lights didn’t just go out. The entire electrical grid was shut down. His eyes rolled back to the whites. His knees unhinged, and he dropped straight down, hitting the concrete path like a felled timber. He didn’t put his hands out to break his fall.

He was unconscious before his face bounced off the pavement. Silence slammed into the playground. For 2 full seconds, nobody moved. The four remaining bullies stared at Trent’s limp body, unable to comprehend the physics of what they had just witnessed. The tired, broken old man had even looked like he swung hard. Trent was simply there, and then he wasn’t. Agrippa didn’t admire his work. He was already resetting, pulling his right hand back to his cheek, his left hand extending slightly to manage the distance. His eyes bypassed Trent entirely and locked onto the scrawny kid with the neck tattoo, the one most likely to panic and swing.
