had made matters worse by rewarding their behavior. He omitted the exact phrase people like you. He did not describe the way he looked at their skin before speaking. Those omissions did not strike him as dishonest because he had already edited the scene in his own memory until it resembled the version he preferred.

"Customers waste time every day," his friend said. "Why worry about it?"

"I'm not worried. Emily is the one who should worry," John replied. "She embarrassed me in front of the staff. I'll make sure Arthur remembers that when evaluations come around."

He set the glass down and looked at the city through his window. His self-confidence had been built on years of discovering that people in authority accepted his account of events when he delivered it without hesitation. He had persuaded himself that speaking with certainty was the same as being correct. The Bennetts had become, in his imagination, another inconvenient episode safely finished by closing time.

At the gallery, Emily remained after the other junior associates had gone home. She wanted to finish the follow-up messages she had promised customers, and she needed the quiet to think. She opened her notebook to the page containing her account of the incident and checked the sequence again. Then she looked at the internal report confirmation on her computer and saved a copy of the acknowledgment email. She was nervous about tomorrow, but not about what she had written. The words were hers, and she knew they were true.

Before leaving, she walked past the midnight-black touring car. Under the evening lights, its surface reflected her like a distorted figure in a mirror. She imagined Eleanor laughing in the passenger seat while Walter tried to decide whether the driver's controls were needlessly elaborate. The image made her smile. Whatever happened next, she hoped the couple would remember that small moment more clearly than the ugly one at the entrance.

By the time John turned off the lamp in his apartment, Michael's arrangements were complete. The collectors had agreed. The drivers were scheduled. Rebecca's letter was ready, and the Bennetts had laid out the same clothes they had worn that morning. John went to bed expecting an ordinary Tuesday and another profitable month. He had no idea that the people he had dismissed were preparing to return, or that the first person they would ask to see inside the gallery would be the young woman he had threatened for treating them decently.

Tuesday began with a sky so clear that the upper windows of the gallery reflected blue instead of the usual gray. The cleaning crew finished early. Arthur Bell spent the first hour reviewing monthly forecasts and speaking with the service manager about an upcoming inspection. At eight thirty, John Williams arrived carrying coffee from an expensive cafe and greeted two colleagues with the easy confidence of someone who believed the difficult part of his job consisted of being surrounded by less capable people.
