"My name is Emily Torres," she said. "I work inside. I saw what happened, and I'm very sorry."

Walter glanced toward the gallery. "You didn't say those things."

"I know. But I heard them and I didn't stop them when I should have. That matters." Emily drew a breath. "I want you to know that you were entitled to walk into that showroom, ask questions, and be treated with respect. He had no right to decide otherwise."

Eleanor studied the young woman's face. It was not the practiced expression of a salesperson making sure a dissatisfied customer did not post an unfavorable review. There was anger there, honest and poorly disguised, alongside something that looked like personal recognition. Eleanor had spent her career listening to children who could tell the difference between being handled and being heard. She could hear that difference now.

"Thank you, dear," she said. "We're all right. Just a little shaken."

"I understand if you don't want to go back inside," Emily continued. "I won't ask you to do anything uncomfortable. But if you still want to see the black touring car, I'd be glad to show it to you myself. We have a quieter area where we can talk, and you won't need to deal with Mr. Williams again."

Walter looked at his wife. It was her wish to see the cars that had brought them there, and he did not want the decision taken from her a second time. She looked toward the windows and then at Emily. Her first instinct was to refuse because leaving would be easier. But she thought about the shame that had followed her through the doors, and she disliked the idea of carrying it home as though it belonged to her.

"I would like that," she said at last. "Just for a few minutes."

Emily smiled, visibly relieved. "Then let's do it properly. And if you decide at any point you'd rather leave, I'll walk you to your car. No questions asked."

They reentered the showroom together. Walter noticed that Emily did not rush ahead, as if a grand entrance would be the best revenge. She walked at Eleanor's pace, explaining where the display vehicles were arranged and asking whether either of them would prefer a chair. The courtesy was ordinary, almost small. After the last fifteen minutes, its ordinariness felt extraordinary.

John spotted them from near his desk. The sight made him stop mid-conversation. Emily could see him considering whether to confront her in front of the guests, then apparently deciding he would gain more by waiting. He turned to another associate and muttered something. Emily caught the word charity and felt her face grow hot, but she kept walking. Her duty, at that moment, was to the two people beside her.
