Ethan did not investigate by invading Daniel's privacy. He asked the finance team to preserve the reimbursement record and contacted Linda for clarification. Her explanation changed twice. First the payment was for a prospective employee background check, then for a security simulation, and finally for an outside consultant engaged to assess the risk presented by an individual close to Victoria. Ethan documented the inconsistencies and brought them to the company's ethics counsel.

Within a day, Bobby agreed through counsel to explain what Linda had asked him to do. The police confirmed that the wallet had been turned in and that Daniel had made a detailed report. Its cash contents remained secured while their ownership was verified. The fabricated identification card and the placement of the wallet on Daniel's porch made the episode far more serious than an innocent prank, even if Linda continued to insist that she had been acting out of concern.

Victoria learned about it on Friday morning. Ethan and the ethics counsel entered her office together and placed the records on her desk. As she read, the quiet gratitude she had felt toward Daniel was replaced by a hot and unfamiliar kind of anger. Linda had not merely doubted him. She had taken a man who asked to be left alone and manufactured an opportunity to tempt, embarrass, or accuse him.

"Was any of this authorized?" Victoria asked.

"No," Ethan said. "There's no company policy allowing tests of private individuals like this, and no lawful reason for company funds to have been used."

"Did Daniel know?"

"Not yet. The police have his report. We'll need to decide how to address it transparently, including whether the company needs to correct the reimbursement and cooperate with any further inquiry."

Victoria pressed her fingertips against the bridge of her nose. For years she had praised Linda's willingness to anticipate trouble, rewarded her for mistrust, and rarely asked what those habits cost people who happened to come under her scrutiny. Now that habit had crossed a line so clear Victoria could not pretend it was an unfortunate misunderstanding.

Linda arrived twenty minutes later. She entered the office with her leather folder and the composed expression she wore during budget meetings. The expression faltered when she saw the courier invoice beside the ethics counsel's notes. She looked first at Ethan, then at Victoria.

"You had him investigated behind my back," she began. "Someone needed to protect you."

"From what, Linda? From a man returning a wallet?"

"From a man who might be positioning himself to use you. You didn't know anything about him."

"Neither did you."

"I knew enough to be careful."

Victoria stood. "You placed a hundred thousand dollars on his porch with false identification. You paid a courier to create a situation where a good man could be made to look dishonest. You used company resources without authorization. Do you understand what that means?"

Linda's face colored. "I was trying to establish whether he could be trusted."

"Trust is not something you manufacture a trap to prove."
