The final audit report arrived three weeks after the acquisition announcement, accompanied by a separate workplace review. Richard held the documents for an afternoon before scheduling the meeting, not because he wanted to soften the findings but because he wanted every participant to understand them. The marketing department's financial records showed careless approvals, incomplete supporting documentation, and an overconfident presentation of campaign results. They did not support an allegation that Vanessa had personally stolen money, received undisclosed vendor payments, or ordered anyone to create false invoices.

The workplace findings were more direct. Multiple employees had documented being removed from assignments after raising technical objections, and review records showed that some of those employees later received unusually vague performance comments. The investigators could not establish retaliatory intent in every case, but they identified enough consistent evidence to conclude that Vanessa's leadership practices had discouraged accurate reporting and open disagreement. Her appropriation of Olivia's work was confirmed through file histories, email exchanges, and original strategy drafts.

Richard met with Vanessa privately before the board received the personnel recommendations. He did not open with a lecture, and he did not imply that her career was finished. He placed the findings on the table, explained the opportunities she would have to respond, and reminded her that every conclusion had been reviewed by an external employment specialist. Vanessa read the summary of the financial inquiry twice before speaking.

"So you're saying I didn't steal anything," she said.

"We're saying the review found no sufficient evidence of personal fraud," Richard corrected. "That is important, and we will make it clear. We're also saying that you approved expenses without adequate checks and that several employees were treated unfairly under your management." He waited for her to absorb both parts before continuing. "One finding does not cancel the other."

Vanessa looked down at the personnel section. It contained anonymized accounts from people she had once congratulated for being hard workers, and she recognized some of the incidents despite the names being removed. A designer had questioned a misleading phrase and lost a major assignment, an analyst had asked for a source and received a poor evaluation, and Olivia had been asked to support claims she knew required qualifications. Vanessa remembered explaining each decision to herself as necessary for speed. Now they looked painfully similar when placed side by side.

"I kept asking for loyalty," she said after a long silence. "I thought it meant they trusted me. Maybe they were just afraid of what happened when they didn't agree." Richard did not congratulate her for recognizing the obvious. He asked whether she disputed the documented events, and she answered that she wanted to clarify several details but could not deny the overall pattern. Her voice was quieter than it had been in his office at any time he remembered.

The board's independent compensation and governance committee reviewed the findings the following morning. Ethan was present for the organizational discussion but recused himself from the portion devoted to Vanessa's employment status, noting the prior relationship and the public encounter. Several directors appreciated the decision, while others looked surprised that a controlling owner would voluntarily step aside. Ethan explained that authority did not require a person to participate in every decision simply because they could.
