Vanessa continued her leadership improvement process under a coach who had no connection to Ethan's personal history. The sessions were difficult because they required her to discuss moments when her behavior contradicted the values she claimed to hold. She described growing up in a family that praised appearances as the most reliable protection against being dismissed. When she received her first prestigious job, she had promised herself she would never again be the person other people overlooked.

The coach asked when that promise had become permission to overlook others. Vanessa had no immediate answer. She talked about fearing that a promotion given to someone else would confirm she was not exceptional, and about treating disagreements as a threat to the control she had worked to acquire. The coach asked her to distinguish ambition, which could motivate excellent work, from contempt, which damaged the people expected to help achieve it. Vanessa recognized the words but found it much harder to apply them during an actual meeting.

One afternoon a junior colleague proposed a customer outreach campaign that Vanessa believed would fail. Her first impulse was to dismiss it before the employee finished presenting, and she felt the familiar irritation rise behind her eyes. She stopped, asked for the assumptions supporting the proposal, and listened as the employee explained the regional evidence. The idea still needed changes, and Vanessa said so, but the conversation ended with a revised test rather than a reprimand. For the rest of the day she felt exhausted by the effort of making a choice that should have been ordinary.

The leadership coach did not call that transformation. She called it practice and asked Vanessa to identify what she would do when she was tired, embarrassed, or under pressure again. Vanessa began keeping a private record of decisions she regretted and ways she had corrected them, not to present to Ethan but to measure whether she was becoming less dependent on the feeling of superiority. Sometimes she still failed, and she found apologizing before someone forced her much harder than defending herself. Progress arrived in small, unglamorous adjustments that nobody would turn into a flattering campaign.

Near the end of the quarter, Olivia was invited to present the revised marketing measurement framework directly to Hawthorne's executive committee. She prepared the slides with Ben and two regional analysts, listing everyone's contributions and marking the limits of every projection. Vanessa attended as the department head but did not attempt to take control of the presentation. When a director congratulated her on the analytical work, she pointed toward Olivia and said, "That is her framework. My job was to give the team the time and resources to test it properly."
