"Did someone hit you?" he asked quietly. Taylor nodded. "I spilled water. Not on purpose. The seat moved, and I kept saying I was sorry." Her voice broke. "She slapped me. And then they said I was being disruptive. They said the police might talk to me when we land." James felt her shaking and rested his hand over hers. "You're not in trouble with me," he said. "Do you hear me? Whatever happened, you don't have to explain it all at once."

He stood only after Taylor gave him a small nod. Diane had been listening, her expression changing as she noticed the uniform and the insignia. When James turned toward her, she smiled the strained smile of someone trying to recover a situation already lost. "I think there's been a misunderstanding," she began. "Your daughter spilled water and became disrespectful." James did not raise his voice. "My daughter has a name," he said. "It's Taylor. And I would like to understand what happened from everyone who saw it."

Diane's eyes moved toward the stars on his shoulders. "Well, Taylor was being confrontational," she said. "I had to defend myself." James looked at his daughter's cheek and then back at Diane. "By striking a sixteen-year-old?" he asked. Diane started to object, but Harold spoke first. "General, if I may, I saw it. She slapped your daughter after your daughter apologized." Amanda added, "I can describe the injury and what I observed. I'm a nurse." From behind them, James Burton raised his phone. "And there's video."

James Grant turned toward the witnesses. "Thank you," he said. "Please don't send me anything you aren't comfortable sharing. We can exchange contact details and provide them to the proper authorities when we land." He spoke as a father asking for help, not as a general issuing an order. That distinction mattered to him. He had spent his career respecting chains of command and understood the danger of using status to solve a personal conflict. He wanted the truth preserved, not obedience extracted.

Jennifer arrived beside him, her face pale. "Sir, I apologize for the disturbance," she began. James turned toward her. "My daughter says she was struck, and then threatened with police intervention. Is that accurate?" Jennifer hesitated. "There were differing accounts." "Then please preserve all accounts," he replied. "Please identify everyone who witnessed the event, arrange medical attention if she needs it, and make an accurate incident report. I'm asking for ordinary passenger protections, nothing more." Jennifer nodded quickly. Her pen hovered above the paper.

Diane tried once more. "I don't know why this needs to become a huge issue," she said. "It was a moment of frustration." James looked at her for a long second. "For you, perhaps," he said. "For my daughter, it was a stranger deciding she could hit her and then tell everyone she deserved it." Diane stared out at the aisle without answering. He turned back to Taylor and asked whether she wanted him to stay beside her until landing. She gripped his hand so firmly that his question answered itself.
