A woman gasped. Somebody farther back said, "She just hit that child." For an instant Taylor heard every separate sound: the ventilation overhead, the creak of leather from the premium seat, a notification chiming from someone's phone. She held her cheek and felt the swelling begin under her fingertips. It was not the pain alone that frightened her. It was the knowledge that an adult had decided she could hurt Taylor in public and probably expected the world to accept her version of events afterward.

Amanda Fisher, a nurse returning from a medical conference, unbuckled her seat belt in 24E. She could see the red mark beginning to rise on Taylor's face. "Are you injured?" Amanda called gently. Diane answered before Taylor could. "She's perfectly fine. She's been harassing me for twenty minutes, and I'm the one who should be concerned." Amanda stared at her. "You slapped a minor," she said. "I saw your hand connect." Diane gave a short contemptuous laugh. "You saw what you wanted to see."

Trevor Scott, a high school teacher in 25C, had been recording since the moment Diane ordered Taylor to stand. He had intervened in enough school confrontations to recognize when a person was escalating rather than resolving a conflict. He wanted to leave his seat and stand beside Taylor, but the aisle was narrow, the flight attendants were approaching, and he worried an abrupt movement would only add confusion. Instead he spoke clearly. "Ma'am, please move away from the student. She hasn't threatened you." He did not know Taylor's name yet. The fact that she was a student and an adult had hit her was enough.

Jennifer Lawson arrived from the forward galley with an expression trained to look soothing. She was thirty-four, had worked for National Airways for eight years, and had learned how quickly angry premium customers could damage a crew's evaluation. Her first glance went to Diane's gold membership tag, visible on the bag under the seat. Her second went to the upset teenager standing in the aisle. The choice she made in those seconds would later become a question she could not escape. "Miss," she said to Taylor, "I need you to sit down and lower your voice."

"She hit me," Taylor said. She hadn't been shouting, but now her voice shook so badly the words emerged unevenly. "I spilled water because her seat moved, and I apologized, and she hit me." Jennifer took a breath and lowered her palms in the calming gesture she used with frightened passengers. "Everyone is upset. Let's not make this worse." "It isn't everyone," Amanda said from behind Taylor. "It's one adult who hit one child." Jennifer's smile tightened. "Please allow the cabin crew to handle the matter."
