She reached the desk as Webb told the guard to keep Amelia from moving farther into the branch. "What's happening?" Lisa asked. "This woman arrived with no appointment and insists on special access," Webb said.

"I've explained how the bank works, but she keeps challenging me." Amelia turned to Lisa. "I asked about opening a business account. No one has offered to show me the requirements, and no one has asked whether I already bank here."

Lisa looked at Amelia's face, then at the brochure, then at the empty office behind Webb. She saw an opportunity to make the encounter ordinary. "I can help you at the desk," she offered. "Would you like information on the commercial checking packages?"

Amelia nodded. "That would be a start." Webb stepped in before Lisa could move. "We are not rewarding this behavior with a private consultation."

Lisa stopped. There would later be a moment, during a recorded interview, when she was asked why she had obeyed. She would remember the words of her mother and the look of quiet irritation on Amelia's face. She would remember thinking that Webb was wrong. She would also remember the annual promotion list, the mortgage she and her husband had just taken on, and the careful path she had followed to reach management. In the lobby, all of that flashed through her mind and produced a silence that would embarrass her more than any other choice that afternoon.

Sarah's phone showed several hundred people joining her livestream. She angled the camera toward herself long enough to say that she was recording a public interaction and would not film customers' private documents or account information. Then she turned the lens back toward the manager. The viewers rose rapidly, and the movement of phones through the lobby began feeding itself.

Someone asked what was happening. Someone else said the manager was throwing a woman out for wanting to ask about an account. A third person insisted there must be something the cameras had missed.

Amelia heard that last remark and felt a familiar weariness. There was always supposed to be something unseen, some behavior that explained why a person in authority was behaving cruelly. The person being humiliated had to prove a negative to strangers who had already chosen an explanation. She could have opened the executive directory on her phone and ended the entire exchange with a title. The thought came to her, then left. She wanted to know whether the bank had a rule that required a person to be important before its employees would listen.

"Do you intend to help me?" she asked. Webb looked at the phones and drew himself taller. "I'm going to ask you one last time to leave without creating a scene." "I'm not creating the scene," Amelia replied.
