Eight months of due diligence had produced mixed findings.

Maya Reynolds, Cole Ventures' lead technology analyst, loved the core platform.

“The engineering is real,” she told Darien during a video call three days before the meeting. “If managed properly, this could become infrastructure.”

James Patel, Cole Ventures' CFO, was less enthusiastic.

“The burn rate is absurd.”

“I know.”

“The requested round is five hundred million dollars.”

“I know.”

“That would make this one of our largest positions.”

“I know.”

James sighed.

“I hate when you say it like that.”

Darien smiled.

Maya opened another report.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Culture.”

Darien's smile disappeared.

Maya continued.

“I found former employee reviews. Not one or two angry people. There are repeated themes.”

“Such as?”

“Senior leadership favoritism. People of color passed over for promotions. Comments about polish, executive presence, culture fit.”

James frowned.

“Anonymous reviews aren't evidence.”

“No.”

Maya agreed.

“But they are signals.”

Darien nodded.

“Anything documented?”

“Three HR complaints we know about through sources. Possibly more.”

“Outcomes?”

“Unknown.”

Darien leaned back.

“Victoria?”

“Her name appears indirectly in two cases.”

James shook his head.

“Walk away.”

Darien looked at the company model on his screen.

Three thousand employees.

Dozens of enterprise customers.

Technology that mattered.

A founder who might be the biggest risk in the entire business.

“I need to meet her.”

James exhaled.

“You've already spoken with the CFO.”

“I need the founder.”

Priya appeared in another video tile.

“Meeting confirmed. Nine a.m. Four Seasons.”

“Send my bio?”

“Full packet.”

“Photo?”

“Forbes link, company page, everything.”

Darien nodded.

“Then she knows I'm coming.”

Except Victoria had not read the packet.

Jenny had forwarded it.

Victoria skimmed the subject line.

COLE VENTURES – FINAL SERIES C DISCUSSION.

She never opened the biography.

Her mistake began long before Darien walked into the hotel.

At 10:31 the morning of the incident, Jenny knocked on Victoria's office door.

“Come in.”

Jenny entered holding a tablet.

She was twenty-nine, organized, discreet, and increasingly tired of being blamed for information Victoria refused to read.

“Do you have a minute?”

“Barely.”

Victoria continued typing.

“The man from the Four Seasons.”

Victoria's fingers kept moving.

“What about him?”

“Darien Cole.”

“Yes.”

Jenny paused.

“You asked me to delete his information.”

“I remember.”

“Are you certain?”

Victoria looked up.

The hesitation irritated her.

“Jenny.”

“I'm asking because—”

“Because what?”

Jenny set the tablet on the desk.

“Because that was Darien Cole.”

Victoria stared.

“I know his name.”

“No.”

Jenny swallowed.

“I mean that was Darien Cole.”

She turned the tablet.

A Forbes article filled the screen.

DARIEN COLE: THE BILLIONAIRE INVESTOR YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF.

Victoria looked at the photograph.

For several seconds, her brain refused to connect the face.

Then it did.

Navy polo.

Calm eyes.
