"Did you observe a weapon?"
"No."
James asked about the moment captured on the body camera, when Rodriguez had begun speaking before Callahan interrupted her. She looked toward the jury, then toward Maya, and finally down at her own hands. "I was going to suggest ending the detention," she said. "I did not see a reason for her to remain on the ground."
"Why didn't you finish the sentence?"
"Officer Callahan told me he had the situation under control. He was the primary officer, and I accepted that."
"Did you believe his treatment of Ms. Richardson was justified?"
Rodriguez was silent long enough for the room to become uncomfortable. Then she answered, "Not based on what I saw."
Brennan objected to the answer as reaching beyond her observations, and the judge instructed James to confine the questions to what Rodriguez personally witnessed. James did. He established that Maya was not struggling, threatening, or attempting to escape during the period Rodriguez observed. Then he asked why she had added a supplemental statement to her original report.
"Because the first summary did not reflect what I saw," Rodriguez answered.
"Who prepared that summary?"
"The supervisor reviewing the incident."
"Did the summary suggest the driver continued resisting after you arrived?"
"It used language that could be read that way. I wanted the record to be clear."
James paused. "Have you worked with Officer Callahan before?"
"For four years."
