Margaret Patterson had reached someone on the phone.
“Chief Donovan’s office?” she said. “This is Margaret Patterson. I need to report one of your officers. He’s assaulting my neighbor in front of her own house.”
Hutchkins heard the name.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.
“Put that phone away!”
Margaret turned her back slightly, not because she was afraid of him, but because she wanted to hear the person on the other end. “847 Elmwood Drive. Yes. The Richardson house.”
Hutchkins looked at Imani.
“The Richardson house?” he repeated.
Imani said nothing.
He seemed to process the surname for the first time. Then pride rushed in to rescue him from doubt.
“Fine,” he said. “You’re under arrest.”
“For what?”
“Disorderly conduct. Resisting. Obstruction.”
“I have not resisted you.”
“You keep challenging lawful commands.”
“Questioning an unlawful detention is not obstruction.”
“Turn around.”
Imani did not run. She did not raise her hands. She did not make any motion that could be misread later. She simply stood in her own driveway and said, “I am not consenting to this arrest.”
Hutchkins seized her wrist.
He twisted it behind her back.
Pain shot through her forearm.
“You’re hurting me.”
“Stop resisting.”
“I am not resisting.”
The phrase was one she had heard in too many videos.
It felt different when the metal cuffs closed around her own wrists.
Brennan stared at the scene with the expression of a man watching the line between loyalty and complicity disappear beneath his feet.
Hutchkins pulled the cuffs tight.
Too tight.
Imani inhaled sharply.
“There,” he said near her ear. “Should have done that from the start.”
Another patrol car turned onto Elmwood Drive.
No siren. Blue lights only.
It pulled to the curb, and Sergeant Linda Morrison stepped out.
Morrison was forty-nine, Black, and twenty years into a career that had taught her to read a scene before she heard anyone explain it. She saw the woman in handcuffs first. Wet blouse. Red wrists. Groceries across the driveway.
Broken phone. Neighbors filming. The empty soda cup.
Then she saw Derek Hutchkins.
Something in her face went still.
“Hutchkins,” she said. “What happened?”
“Suspicious activity,” he replied instantly. “Possible drug involvement. Subject became hostile and resisted.”
Morrison looked at Imani, then at the house.
“Ma’am, do you live here?”
“Yes.”
“Is that your vehicle?”
