Finch laughed, looked toward Corston, and repeated her title with open disbelief. Corston did not laugh, but neither did he suggest checking it. Gloria noticed the silence. It had a different quality from Finch's hostility, but it was just as consequential. She had heard officers testify many times that they had simply followed a colleague's lead. Here was the beginning of one more such sentence, taking shape in real time.

"I don't care who you are," Finch said. "You don't tell me how to do my job. Turn around. Hands behind your back."

"Officer, I've cooperated," Gloria said. "I have not committed a theft. Please explain the legal basis for arresting me before you—"

He seized her before she finished. The impact against the bumper was hard enough to make her gasp. Corston caught her other arm and pulled it behind her. Gloria's instinct was to brace herself against the car so she wouldn't fall, but Finch treated the movement as defiance. He shouted that she was resisting. The handcuffs snapped shut, and Malik raised his phone instinctively, his hands shaking as he pressed record.

The teenager had never seen a judge outside television dramas, and he did not yet understand the significance of Gloria's name. He understood the difference between a woman refusing to answer questions and one trying desperately to answer them. He captured Finch's hands on her arms, Corston's grip, the shove against the Honda, and the moment Gloria said in a voice strained with pain, "I'm not fighting you. Please stop telling people that I am." A woman near the entrance filmed from another angle. A man leaning against a truck captured a third video, beginning just before she was handcuffed.

Linda Carver stood beside her SUV and watched the arrest she had set in motion. The bag of crackers sat where Gloria had left it, plainly visible to anyone who bothered to look. Linda glanced toward it only once. When a stranger asked whether she was the woman who had called the police, she said the officers were handling the matter and that people should let them do their jobs. Then she put her shopping bags into the SUV, climbed in, and drove away before Finch had finished placing Gloria in the cruiser.

Gloria's trunk remained open. Her groceries stood in neat paper bags in the afternoon heat; the chicken was beginning to warm, the avocados sat unbruised on top, and a packet of ginger cookies leaned against a carton of milk. The car's rear bumper carried the same small scratch it had carried before the police arrived. Nothing about the ordinary scene had changed, except the person who owned it had been taken away in handcuffs. As the cruiser pulled out, Malik filmed the empty space where she had stood and then turned his camera toward the cart return, where the abandoned crackers remained untouched.
