The holding room door opened. Norah Whitfield stepped inside wearing a black coat over her business suit, her silver hair pulled back severely. She carried a leather briefcase and a look that could cut glass.
"Officer Bellamy," she said coolly. "Step away from my client."
Bellamy stood slowly. "We're just having a conversation."
"No, you're attempting to interrogate a detained suspect without counsel present. The conversation is over."
Bellamy's face flushed, but he moved toward the door. "Your client made threats against a respected member of this community, Counselor. That's not going to disappear because you show up with paperwork."
Norah opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick folder. "Officer, by sunrise tomorrow, this entire department's relationship with Hullbrook Dynamics will be under federal investigation. I suggest you focus on protecting yourself instead of continuing to protect people who never cared about protecting you."
Bellamy's confident expression flickered. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means your text messages with Vanessa Hullbrook are evidence now. It means your response patterns in wealthy neighborhoods versus poor neighborhoods are being analyzed. It means the technology contract your department signed with Hullbrook Dynamics is about to become Exhibit A in a civil rights investigation."
The color drained from Bellamy's face. He looked at Marcus, then back at Norah. "You're bluffing."
Norah pulled out her phone and scrolled through her recent emails. "FBI field office, received at 12:31 a.m. City Inspector General, received at 12:33 a.m. Federal Communications Commission, received at 12:35 a.m." She looked up at Bellamy. "Would you like me to continue?"
Bellamy left the room without another word.
Norah sat down across from Marcus. "Are you hurt?"
"No. Just tired of being treated like a criminal in my own neighborhood."
"Well, that's about to change." She opened the folder and showed him copies of the documents. "Everything you prepared is being reviewed right now. Emergency motion filed. Federal complaints submitted."
Marcus nodded. "And the board?"
"Eleanor Hullbrook is about to have a very unpleasant morning." Norah checked her watch. "Actually, she's about to have a very unpleasant phone call in about three minutes."
She dialed Eleanor's private number. The call connected on the first ring.
"This is Eleanor Hullbrook."
"Mrs. Hullbrook, this is Norah Whitfield, counsel for Marcus Ellison. I'm calling to inform you that your daughter has made a serious mistake tonight."
A pause. "Ms. Whitfield. It's nearly 1:00 in the morning."
"Yes, it is. And by sunrise, your family's conspiracy with the Ashborne Police Department may become front-page news. I suggest you prepare accordingly."
The Hullbrook Dynamics building stood dark against the predawn sky, its glass facade reflecting the empty parking lot below. Only one floor showed light, the executive level, where Eleanor Hullbrook sat alone in the private conference suite at 4:47 a.m.
She wore a navy blazer over a white blouse, her silver hair perfectly styled despite the early hour. Her hands rested flat on the polished mahogany table, but her fingers trembled slightly. The coffee cup beside her had gone cold an hour ago.
The conference room door opened. Norah Whitfield stepped inside carrying two briefcases and wearing the same black coat from the police station. Her expression was sharp and professional, like a surgeon preparing to operate.
"Mrs. Hullbrook, thank you for meeting on such short notice."
Eleanor didn't stand. "Ms. Whitfield, I trust this emergency couldn't wait until business hours."
Norah set her briefcases on the table and opened the first one. "Your daughter is currently at your home with your husband trying to craft a media response to the arrest of Marcus Ellison. They believe they can control this story."
"Vanessa was protecting herself and our community from—"
"From the majority owner of this company," Norah said. "The man your family invited to save Hullbrook Dynamics from complete financial collapse."
Eleanor's composure cracked for just a moment. Her eyes flicked to the file, then back to Norah's face. "I don't know what you think you've discovered, but—"
"Authorization of emergency capital investment dated six months ago." Norah opened the file and slid the first document across the table. "Your signature, Mrs. Hullbrook, approving the sale of 51% of company shares to Ellison Holdings LLC."
The blood drained from Eleanor's face. She stared at the document like it might disappear if she looked hard enough.
Norah continued relentlessly. "Board Resolution 2024-03 approving the terms of acquisition. Your signature again. Purchase agreement amendment extending Marcus Ellison's authority over corporate operations. Your signature a third time."
Eleanor's voice came out as barely a whisper. "Those documents are confidential."
