As she reached the aisle, her phone rang. She frowned at the name on the screen: Hullbrook Dynamics, Executive Office. She answered in a clipped whisper. A voice informed her that an emergency executive session had been moved forward and that she was expected at headquarters first thing Monday morning. The new controlling shareholder intended to address senior management personally. His counsel had requested the presence of the public relations director.

Vanessa swallowed. “What’s his name?”

“I’m not authorized to disclose the name by telephone,” the assistant said. “The legal department has distributed the agenda. Nine o’clock, sharp.”

The call ended. For a moment Vanessa stood in the aisle with the phone still against her ear. Marcus passed her without comment, carrying the flash drive in his hand. She watched him leave and felt a fresh surge of resentment. He had taken something from her that evening: not her home or her money, but the assumption that everybody would automatically believe her. She did not yet realize he held power over something much more substantial.

Outside, the sky had turned violet. Evelyn caught up with Marcus near the clubhouse steps. “I’m glad you showed them,” she said. “I should have spoken sooner when the first video went around.”

“You did speak. You recorded what happened and offered it when people were still willing to dismiss it.”

“I hope it makes a difference.”

“So do I.”

Evelyn regarded him for a moment. “Vanessa isn’t used to being contradicted. Be careful.”

“My mother gave me the same advice.”

“Your mother sounds sensible.”

“She usually is.”

He walked home beneath the trees, feeling a little lighter. A few neighbors waved from their porches. He returned the gestures without stopping. He knew a single video would not transform years of deference and prejudice, but the neighborhood had finally been made to look at itself. On his phone, a message from Nora reminded him that the next morning’s corporate meeting would require a different kind of steadiness. Whatever happened in the boardroom, he intended to remain the same man who had stood in his driveway and spoken plainly.

At eight forty-five on Monday morning, Vanessa entered the downtown headquarters of Hullbrook Dynamics. The building rose thirty-two stories above the financial district, its glass front reflecting buses, office towers, and the pale autumn sky. Her grandfather’s name appeared in silver lettering across the lobby. As a child, she had walked through these doors holding his hand and watched receptionists stand whenever he approached. She still expected the same instinctive recognition now. The security officer greeted her politely, but his smile seemed restrained, as though he knew something she did not.

In the executive elevator she examined her reflection. She had chosen a charcoal suit and a narrow silk scarf, clothing that suggested command rather than defensiveness. She had slept only four hours after the clubhouse meeting.
