Each time she closed her eyes, she saw the enormous screen replaying her raised middle finger and heard the older woman’s disappointed voice. She told herself that Marcus had manipulated the room. She told herself he had prepared the footage to make her seem cruel. What she could not explain was why the original encounter had looked so different when she was forced to watch it from somebody else’s perspective.

The boardroom was already occupied when she arrived. Eleanor Hullbrook sat at the head of the long table, her silver hair immaculate, a legal folder placed squarely before her. Arthur stood beside the windows with his hands clasped behind his back.

Patricia Drummond, the company’s chief legal officer, was speaking quietly with David Sterling, the finance director. Robert Kellison, who oversaw product operations, tapped a pen against his notebook. Two independent directors had joined by video from other cities. Vanessa was struck by how little anyone seemed interested in her arrival.

“What happened?” she asked. “Why the emergency session?”

Arthur turned from the window. “Sit down, Vanessa.”

“Dad, I have a press strategy call at ten. If this is another investor update—”

“Sit down.”

His tone silenced her. Eleanor looked at her daughter with tired eyes. For months she had concealed the severity of the company’s problems under reassuring language about restructuring and temporary pressure. She had signed agreements because lenders were withdrawing, lawsuits were growing, and several municipal contracts were approaching renewal without enough cash to fulfill them. She had believed she could preserve her family’s standing by accepting an outside rescue while allowing Arthur and Vanessa to imagine they still controlled the business. That decision now felt less like protection than cowardice.

“The new majority shareholder is attending,” Eleanor said. “He requested a formal introduction to executive management.”

Vanessa shrugged. “Then let’s be welcoming. We know how to handle investors.”

“This one has questions about SafeWatch,” David replied.

“Everyone has questions about SafeWatch. It’s our most successful platform.”

“It’s also involved in the largest group of unresolved complaints,” Patricia said.

Vanessa gave her an irritated look. “Our legal department has been managing those complaints. We’ve explained the system isn’t designed around race.”

“That’s a claim,” Patricia answered. “We need to know whether the facts support it.”

The door opened before Vanessa could respond. Nora Whitfield entered first, carrying two thin binders. A moment later Marcus Ellison followed her, wearing a dark gray suit and holding the same restrained expression Vanessa remembered from the driveway. He moved calmly to an empty chair across the table. For an instant, Vanessa assumed he had followed her to cause another scene. She actually began to rise.

“What is he doing here?”

Eleanor closed her eyes. Arthur looked from Marcus to his wife, suddenly alert. Nora placed a corporate ownership certificate on the table and slid it toward the directors.

“Good morning,” Marcus said. “I’m Marcus Ellison, principal of Ellison Holdings and controlling shareholder of Hullbrook Dynamics. My firm acquired fifty-one percent of the company under the restructuring agreement completed last Thursday. Ms. Whitfield is my counsel.”
