Mitchell mistook the change for defiance. She demanded that Barnes request additional units, then called dispatch herself, claiming the gathering had become hostile and that children were at risk. Her account did not mention the destroyed food, her officer's treatment of Mrs. Washington, or the frightened boy in his mother's arms. James listened carefully as she invented a scene different from the one forty people were watching. The lie had the effortless rhythm of repetition.

"You don't get to make a false report about my son," Maya said.

"I get to report what I observe," Mitchell answered. "And what I observe is a family that needs intervention."

A different sound entered the conversation then, faint but unmistakable. It was James's phone vibrating against the inside pocket of his trousers. Carter was attempting to reach him through the contact channel they used when the security of an assignment changed. He knew that the team was probably watching the gathering from a distance. He also knew he could not remain silent if Mitchell used her authority to separate Marcus from Maya.

"Lieutenant," James said, rising carefully to his feet. "Let the child stay with his mother. We can resolve your questions without involving him."

"Get back down," Mitchell ordered.

James did not. His hands remained open. "I'm asking one more time. Leave my family out of this."

Mitchell stepped toward Maya and took Marcus by the upper arm. The boy cried out and reached for his mother. It was not a sustained struggle; it lasted only seconds, but those seconds transformed the encounter. Maya followed immediately, demanding that the lieutenant release him. Barnes raised a hand as though to block her path. Several parents shouted that Mitchell needed to stop.

"Maybe a trip to child services will teach everyone some manners," Mitchell said, holding Marcus away from Maya.

James felt every competing priority inside him resolve into one. The investigation, the undercover identity, the fear of warning conspirators, even his own safety no longer stood above the immediate need to protect the child crying in front of him. He had never promised Carter that he would allow an innocent child to be used to preserve an operation. He had promised Maya the opposite.

"Release my son," he said.

Mitchell tightened her hold. "Or what?"

James slowly raised both hands, told the officers he was reaching for his phone, and waited for them to see the movement. He did not touch his concealed weapon. He took the phone from his pocket, pressed a secure emergency contact, and heard the connection open. Carter answered almost at once.

"This is Special Agent James Thompson," he said, loud enough for the people around him to hear. "My cover is compromised at Druid Hill Park. Lieutenant Sarah Mitchell and her officers have threatened civilians, destroyed property, and are currently restraining my eight-year-old son. Initiate the protective response. There are children throughout the pavilion."

Mitchell's face twisted with contempt, but the contempt no longer looked as certain as it had moments before. "You expect me to believe that?" she asked.
