Daisy and Charlie have become a familiar pair at the shelter.

Daisy is a 10-year-old Beagle mix.

Charlie is a 14-year-old Labrador mix.

Charlie is the older of the two.

He has a completely gray muzzle and moves slowly around the kennel.

His hearing isn't as strong as it used to be.

Sometimes he doesn't react when staff call his name.

Sometimes he doesn't notice a door opening behind him.

Daisy seems to understand.

She is more alert.

She notices footsteps.

She notices doors.

She notices unfamiliar sounds.

And she seems especially aware of Charlie.

When they walk together, Daisy often stays close.

If Charlie stops, she stops.

If he turns around, she turns around.

If he gets distracted, she waits.

The staff first noticed how much Daisy watches him during an afternoon when the shelter became unusually noisy.

Several doors opened at once.

A few dogs began barking.

Charlie was resting on his blanket when a loud noise suddenly came from the hallway.

He stood up quickly.

He looked around.

He couldn't immediately figure out where the sound had come from.

Daisy noticed him.

She walked over.

Then she gently touched her nose against his shoulder.

Charlie turned toward her.

He saw Daisy.

His body relaxed.

He slowly lay back down.

Daisy settled beside him.

Within a few minutes, both dogs were quiet again.

It was a small moment.

But the staff had seen enough to understand their relationship.

Daisy doesn't seem to think of Charlie as someone she has to protect every second.

She simply knows when he needs her nearby.

Charlie, in return, seems to trust her.

When she walks away, he watches.

When she returns, he settles.

They have created a little rhythm together.

During breakfast, Charlie eats slowly.

Daisy usually finishes first.

But she waits for him.

When he finishes, they leave the bowls behind and return to their bed.

During walks, Daisy sometimes wants to investigate every smell in the yard.

Charlie prefers to move slowly.

So Daisy explores a little.

Then she comes back.

She never seems to mind waiting.

The shelter staff often smile when they see it.

Daisy could easily wander around by herself.

Instead, she keeps checking where Charlie is.

And Charlie seems content knowing she is close.

Both dogs are seniors.

Charlie is 14.

At his age, long walks are no longer necessary.

He enjoys sitting outside in the sun.

He likes soft blankets.

He loves quiet company.

Daisy is younger, but she also seems to enjoy their peaceful routine.

She still has moments when she wants to sniff around and explore.

But she always comes back.

That is what makes their relationship special.

They don't have to be identical.

They don't have to do everything together.

They simply make room for each other.

One afternoon, Charlie fell asleep in the exercise yard.

Daisy was still awake.

She walked around for a few minutes.
