Michael paused briefly, then spoke with rehearsed firmness. "I'm very sorry, but your name isn't on tonight's VIP list. Furthermore, we're fully booked. If you'd like, I can recommend another hotel nearby."

"I am Eleanor Johnson, the founder of the Grand American," she replied patiently. "Since this hotel opened, a room has always been held for me whether or not I made a formal reservation."

Michael studied her. The modest clothes, old handbag, and gentle manner did not fit the image of the legendary hospitality executive he had built in his mind. He chose the explanation that made him most comfortable: the woman had to be mistaken or pretending.

"I'm sorry, but there must be some misunderstanding," Michael said. "Eleanor Johnson is a very well-known figure, and to my knowledge she is not currently in Chicago. I believe you may have confused her with someone else."

Jessica stood beside him, growing more confident now that her manager appeared to share her judgment. Eleanor did not become angry. She only nodded once, reached for her phone again, and placed another call.

"Hello, Anthony. I'm having a small issue at the Grand American. It seems your staff doesn't believe I'm Eleanor Johnson. Perhaps you should handle this yourself."

The softness of her voice made both Jessica and Michael uneasy. They exchanged a glance. Michael tried to suppress the rising discomfort by convincing himself that the call was another part of the woman's performance.

After Eleanor ended the call, Michael stepped back and lowered his voice to Jessica. "Call security. We need to handle this before it becomes a larger disturbance."

Jessica hesitated. For the first time, doubt flickered across her face. Still, she picked up the phone. Less than a minute later, two hotel security officers entered the lobby and positioned themselves near Eleanor, close enough to make their purpose clear.

Other guests began noticing the scene. An older couple sitting nearby whispered to one another. A group of younger guests near the doors turned to watch. The piano continued playing softly, but the mood around the front desk changed as more people sensed tension and looked toward the elderly woman being surrounded by security.

"What's going on?" a well-dressed woman whispered to her husband.

He watched Eleanor and replied, loud enough for her to hear, "She seems to be causing some kind of trouble."

The words caused a sharp ache in Eleanor's chest. They reminded her of other rooms, other doors, other moments when strangers had decided that simply existing in an unexpected place made her suspicious. She stood at the center of their scrutiny, maintaining her composure even as memories she had buried began pressing close to the surface.

Michael addressed her again. "Mrs. Johnson, I would appreciate your cooperation. We truly don't want any trouble here."

"I'm not here to cause trouble," Eleanor answered. "I'm waiting for the person I called to resolve this matter."
