"Do not leave the area until the access issue is resolved unless your safety requires it," Terrence said. "Do not argue with the guards or surrender your phone. I am calling Sentinel Shield's leadership, the HOA board, and our office. We are preserving everything, starting now."

"Understood."

"And Fletcher? None of those calls will change the fact that you should have been allowed home thirty minutes ago. I know you're calm. That doesn't make what happened small."

Fletcher ended the call and placed the phone beside the peaches, which were beginning to warm on the passenger seat. He stayed quiet. The front gate remained closed, but he no longer needed to convince Craig Sutton that he was telling the truth. The facts had always existed. The problem was that nobody with immediate control had been willing to acknowledge them.

Eight minutes later, Craig's radio crackled. He brought it to his ear with a casual expression that disappeared almost immediately. The caller identified himself as Daniel Hartwell, the chief executive of Sentinel Shield Services. Fletcher could hear fragments of the conversation because Hartwell was speaking forcefully and Craig had failed to lower the volume. The chief executive asked whether the Range Rover at the Greystone entrance belonged to Fletcher Owens.

Craig attempted to explain that the driver was not on his printed list. Hartwell interrupted and asked whether Craig had opened the current resident roster emailed three weeks earlier. Craig hesitated long enough for everyone nearby to see that the answer would not help him. Hartwell told him the correct file contained Fletcher's photograph, address, and plate number. He then ordered Craig to open the gate immediately and remain at the booth pending relief from his duties.

"Sir, I was following protocol," Craig protested.

"You were instructed to verify a resident," Hartwell said, his words audible through the radio. "You ignored the information we provided and prevented him from reaching his home. You are suspended pending investigation. Do not contact the Owens family. Do you understand?"

Craig stared at the device as though it had changed shape in his hand. Dennis heard the conversation and hurried toward the gate controls. The mechanism started with a low vibration, then the iron bars began to slide apart along their track. Fletcher watched the opening widen, revealing the familiar curve of Greystone Lane. It was the same road he had been permitted to use every day since purchasing his house.

Almost simultaneously, Victoria's phone rang. She looked at the screen, frowned, and stepped away to answer. Fletcher heard her say that the whole situation had been confusing and that the guards had been trying to help. Then her voice faltered. The caller, another HOA board member, was evidently asking why she had refused to confirm the identity of a resident whose name and photograph appeared on the list she had personally approved.

"I wasn't completely certain," Victoria said, turning her back to the others. "No, I understand what the file says, but you weren't here."
