I showed her the first page Daniel had given me. She read the heading, then my name, and her expression changed. Denise had been married for twenty-six years and had raised two daughters. She knew what it meant to build something over time and to discover that somebody you trusted had begun treating it as a resource to be spent without permission. She placed the page back in my hand with extraordinary care.

"That property is your mother's place, isn't it?" she asked.

I nodded. "Dad's workshop is there. The pecan tree. Everything."

"Then you have more important things to do than serve drinks to your husband's vacation party."

The way she said it was so matter-of-fact that I nearly smiled. A part of me had been ashamed of stepping away from my flight, as though Ryan's deception could somehow make me professionally unreliable. Denise removed the shame without argument. She was right: doing the job properly sometimes meant acknowledging when the job belonged to someone else for the day.

A minute later the galley curtain moved again. Ashley stood there alone, clutching a cream-colored handbag against her body, her eyes bright and her lipstick slightly smudged. She looked toward Denise before speaking, as if trying to decide whether she could ask for privacy. "Could I talk to Valerie for one minute?" she asked.

"You may speak here with me present," Denise replied. "We are not blocking the aisle, and we need to keep this brief."

Ashley looked at me. The anger she had displayed at the door was gone, replaced by a frightening, concentrated uncertainty. "Ryan just said you were angry about the divorce and that you were trying to embarrass him. He said you knew about me. Is any of that true?"

I thought about how easy it would be to turn her pain into an argument. She had slept with my husband, traveled with him, and accepted the gifts he purchased while I worried about mortgage payments and my mother's property. I could have told her everything I thought of her in that moment. Instead, I remembered that she had looked shocked at the aircraft door, and that lying had become Ryan's preferred method of keeping both of us from asking one another the questions that mattered.

"I did not know about you until I saw you with him," I said. "We are not separated. We are married and living in the same house. This morning he told me he was going to Austin for work."

Her face tightened. "He told me he slept in a hotel every night because you were living somewhere else."

"He slept at home on Tuesday. He had dinner with me on Wednesday. Yesterday I washed the white shirt he's wearing."

She looked away, blinking rapidly. There was a kind of humiliation in discovering that the private details someone had offered as proof of intimacy were merely inventions designed to keep the machinery of deception moving. Ashley took a breath, then opened her handbag with fingers that were no longer steady.
