Someone created a social media account devoted to warning residents about the unstable upstream structure and the dangerous behavior of a retired veteran living outside the community. The posts included photographs of my driveway, close enough to suggest the author had stood near my fence. One accused me of intimidating families, another implied that my service-related medical retirement made me unpredictable. I saved the posts and sent them to Marlo, who told me that outrage was not a substitute for evidence of who had written them.

Autumn found the posts before I told her. She came over after work with Avery and Micah asleep in the back of her car, parked by the barn, and marched up the porch steps holding out her phone. "They're talking about you like you're some kind of threat to children," she said. "Dad, this has gone way beyond an argument over a dam."

"I know."

"Then stop telling me everything is fine."

I opened my mouth to make the usual reassuring speech and caught myself. My daughter had asked me for the truth, and I was on the verge of giving her a lie dressed as comfort. "It's not fine," I admitted. "It's ugly, and I don't like it. But I have a lawyer, I have records, and I won't make it worse by losing my temper."

"What about the wedding?"

"The wedding is happening. You and Nolan have worked too hard to let one woman take it from you."

Autumn leaned against the railing. "Mom would have had Cordelia crying in the first five minutes."

"Your mother would have made her a pie, learned every detail of the trouble, and only then made her cry."

For the first time that evening, Autumn smiled. We stood listening to the creek below, and I let the water settle my thoughts. I wished Lillian had been there, not because she could solve everything but because she would have reminded me that being right and being present for your family were two different responsibilities. I was going to need to manage both.

Marlo recommended one final precaution before the wedding. She had found that Cordelia's most recent legal threat referred to a structural inspection performed weeks earlier, yet no one had produced the actual report despite repeated requests. We commissioned an independent engineer with appropriate state credentials to review the visible condition of the dam and examine the existing records. He found some aging mortarless joints that deserved continued attention, bank stabilization work to schedule, and no observable evidence of an imminent collapse requiring destruction within forty-eight hours.

He also noted that any intervention should account for downstream conditions. Abrupt removal could release retained water and destabilize the banks, and the safer options would require planning, proper approvals, and control of sediment and flow. His conclusions were measured and qualified, as competent conclusions tend to be. He did not promise that the dam was immortal; he said there was no basis in what he had examined for the extraordinary urgency Cordelia was asserting.
