The judge nodded once. Her ruling came after a short recess and was narrower than either side's public statements later suggested. She denied Silver Ridge's request for unrestricted emergency access and removal, directed the parties to preserve records, and allowed necessary inspections through qualified agencies under agreed conditions. Any relocation would require appropriate approvals and a lawful basis, and the ownership and damage claims remained open for further proceedings.
I did not cheer. Courtrooms are full of people whose lives do not improve because somebody announces a winner, and I have never liked the sound of celebration where others are still waiting for help. Daniel put a hand on my shoulder as we gathered the documents, and I knew he was relieved. We had prevented the most immediate harm: another crew arriving to move the fish before anybody knew where they would go.
Outside, Karen stood near the courthouse steps with her attorney. She watched us pass, then called my name. Daniel slowed, but I shook my head and kept walking toward Claire's car. I had heard enough from Karen in two weeks to understand that a new conversation would probably produce another demand instead of an answer.
Claire was waiting beside the driver's door. She looked at my face and asked whether we had lost. I told her the court had stopped the unsupervised removal and ordered everyone to preserve evidence. Her shoulders dropped, and she hugged me so tightly that the file under my arm bent against her coat.
"That's enough for today," she said.
"It is."
On the drive home, she asked whether I thought Karen would stop. I looked out at the wooded hills, the farmhouses, and the occasional new development advertisement beside the road. "I think she's worried about something much bigger than a pond," I answered. "People don't push this hard when they've got nothing to lose."
The first consequence of the hearing arrived before sunset. The association sent a message to its members saying it had temporarily postponed remediation while environmental questions were reviewed. The notice did not mention that the court had denied the broad relief Silver Ridge requested, and it did not mention my lack of consent. Nancy forwarded it with a single question: Is this accurate?
I gave the message to Daniel rather than answering on my own. He sent a short, factual response to the association's attorney asking that public statements not mischaracterize the order. I was beginning to see how much work went into keeping a record accurate after the dramatic part was over. A hearing lasted a morning, but afterward the same people could spend weeks describing it in ways that served their interests.
That night Martin called to tell me the trust's board had voted to fund a full review of its remaining Riverstone assets. Its members were alarmed by the copied signature and the gap in records, and they wanted an independent specialist to reconstruct which fish should have remained at the old facility. They had also located Everett Pike through his former employer, who said he had resigned after a disagreement about clearing the holding ponds.
"Will he talk?" I asked.
"Our lawyer is trying to arrange it. I don't want to pretend we have his story yet."
