Then a little boy ran past her, soaked and laughing. Another child shouted, "Water fight!" Someone yelled at them not to waste water. Someone else yelled that it was already on.
Imani stood very still.
Then she stepped into the spray.
Dominique's breath caught.
Lorraine reached for her hand.
Imani let the water hit her shoulder, then her face. She closed her eyes. The old terror passed across her expression like a shadow moving over sunlight. Then it kept moving.
She opened her eyes and laughed.
It was not loud at first.
Then it was.
The sound broke something open in Dominique's chest that the settlement, the board vote, the apology letter, and the headlines had not touched. Lorraine wiped her eyes with the corner of a napkin and pretended it was allergies.
Later that night, after the picnic ended and the folding tables were packed away, Dominique sat with her daughter on Lorraine's porch. The hydrangeas glowed pale blue in the moonlight. The hose lay coiled by the spigot, ordinary again.
"You were brave today," Dominique said.
Imani leaned against her shoulder. "I wasn't trying to be."
"That counts too."
"Do you think Mrs. Vale is sorry?"
Dominique considered lying in a way that would make the world easier.
She chose not to.
"I think she is sorry there were consequences. I don't know if she is sorry for what she did."
Imani nodded slowly. "That's different."
"Very different."
"Do I have to forgive her?"
"No."
Imani looked surprised. "Grandma says forgiveness frees you."
"Sometimes."
"What do you say?"
Dominique looked at the flowers, at the porch light, at the street where neighbors had once watched through blinds and later learned to step outside.
"I say you do not have to rush your heart just because other people are uncomfortable with what they did."
Imani rested her head back on her mother's shoulder.
"I like that better."
Dominique kissed the top of her braids.
Years later, people still told the story wrong.
They called it the hose incident. They called it the HOA meltdown. They called it the day a Karen got exposed for spraying a child. Online, people cut the clips into dramatic montages and argued about whether Marjorie deserved worse. Some commenters said Dominique destroyed her. Others said Lorraine's speech changed the neighborhood. A few said Imani should have let go of the hose faster, because there is always someone committed to misunderstanding a child when accountability feels inconvenient.
Imani hated most versions.
Not because they were all false.
Because they were too small.
The story was not only that Marjorie sprayed her.
