Greg moved into my path before I had taken another step. "You're not authorized to enter HOA-managed property," he said, spreading his feet. I told him he was standing at the entrance to private land that I owned and asked him to move his truck. He did not move. Instead, he looked at Christine, who raised her clipboard slightly, like a conductor preparing the next note.

I took out my phone to photograph the obstruction. Evelyn stepped forward with her hand covering the lens, saying photographs were prohibited during a private association enforcement action. I lowered the phone only enough to avoid making physical contact, then captured the license plates and the gate from farther back. She continued saying I did not have permission to record her. I answered that I was documenting access to my own property and did not intend to argue about the camera.

Christine noticed the blue folder visible through my car window. "Mr. Johnson, you seem like a reasonable man," she said, changing to a softer voice. "Our annual assessments are only twelve thousand dollars, and there are separate charges for the road, community security, and dock use. Pay this balance and you'll receive a certificate of compliance. If this neighborhood is more expensive than you expected, perhaps someone should have warned you before the auction."

Twelve thousand dollars every year, on top of a debt I did not owe, would have made my bargain impossible to keep. The road they claimed to maintain was not even the road I used. My dock stood on a shoreline parcel that had never appeared in the association's plat. I asked Christine one last question: if I paid today, what guarantee would prevent another charge tomorrow? She smiled for the first time and said that owners who cooperated seldom had problems.

I could have spent the afternoon explaining easements, recording systems, and the difference between a corporation's existence and its jurisdiction over land. I could also have shouted. Instead, I told them I would review any documents they sent and asked once more that they clear the gate. Christine said she would not authorize entry while my account remained delinquent. I walked back to my truck, recorded the vehicles from the road, and drove away without giving them the angry scene they seemed prepared to use.

Through my rearview mirror, I watched Greg laugh at something Evelyn said. Christine took out her phone, nodded through a short conversation, and glanced toward my departing car. They did not look worried that I would find a lawyer. They looked like people finishing a job they had performed many times before. That was the first moment I wondered whether the person I had replaced in their scheme was the former Morrison owner or some other auction buyer entirely.
