Thomas returned through the doorway just as a court attendant asked him to confirm he was present only as a family member. Richard rose halfway from his chair, then remained frozen. Thomas looked at the landlord who had made his mother afraid to sleep, then at the two people seated beside Nadia. His face was controlled, but the effort was visible.

"For clarity," Thomas said to the attendant, speaking loudly enough for Richard to hear, "those are my parents. I am not appearing as counsel, and I will not sit in judgment of any matter involving them. I am here because they asked me to be their son."

The words struck Richard harder than any raised voice could have. He looked at Eleanor, then James, then the man in the dark suit who had just disclaimed the kind of power Richard had spent weeks boasting about. The difference was suddenly unbearable: Richard had claimed to possess judges, while the actual judge standing before him had refused to use a single ounce of official authority for private advantage.

"Your honor," Richard began, forgetting Thomas was not presiding.

"Mr. Caldwell," Thomas answered evenly, "you can address the judge who will hear your case. I have no decision to make about you."

Nadia guided Thomas to a seat in the gallery. Eleanor felt the pressure in her chest ease for the first time that morning. She was proud of him, not because his title frightened Richard, but because he understood how to keep the title separate from what mattered.

An independent judge, the Honorable Vivian Mercer, entered a few moments later and called the case. She had decades of experience with emergency housing disputes and a reputation for expecting paperwork to mean exactly what it claimed. Her courtroom had no patience for grandstanding. She asked Caldwell's lawyer to identify the lawful basis of the eviction request before anyone made a speech about the changing neighborhood.

Hamilton described alleged lease violations, safety concerns, and an owner seeking to modernize an aging property. He presented the notices Richard had signed. Judge Mercer studied them and asked where the underlying complaints had been filed. Hamilton hesitated and said the owner maintained records that could be produced. She asked whether the records were present today. They were not.

"Then let's not pretend the allegations are findings," she said. "Mr. Caldwell has filed a petition. He has not proved it."

Nadia rose with Eleanor's rent history and the lease. She explained the absence of arrears, the inconsistent notices, and the emergency conditions created by repeated interruptions. She asked the court to reject any immediate removal request and to order the owner not to interfere with the couple's lawful possession while their claims were investigated. Judge Mercer listened, then asked for the most reliable evidence of recent interference.
