For a second, I was back at the table a year earlier, staring at a ring and trying to understand what kind of celebration I was being invited to attend. I could smell the candle wax, hear the fork against the plate, and remember how foolish I'd felt for thinking I was about to hear good news. Then I looked at Rebecca standing in my kitchen, waiting for an honest answer rather than a performance.

"No," I said. "It's just a weird coincidence. Minerva bought that exact dessert the night she told me she was engaged to Landon."

Rebecca set it on the counter. "Do you want me to put it away?"

I considered the question. "No. I'd actually like some."

She smiled. We ate pasta at the table, talked about work, argued gently over whether the dough had been too wet, and shared the tiramisu. Nothing exploded. No ring appeared. Nobody announced a secret that required the other person to absorb a betrayal and call it exciting. There was only dinner, and it was enough.

After Rebecca left, I cleaned the kitchen and put the last portion of dessert in the refrigerator. I opened the drawer where I kept the old paperwork and found the folder from that first week. It contained the police report number, the property list, the messages, the vehicle documentation, and the court orders. I checked that the documents were still in the right place, closed the folder, and put it away. I didn't need to read them again to know what had happened.

I went out to the porch and sat beneath the light I'd repaired with Jonah. The street was quiet. Someone was walking a dog two houses down, and I could hear a basketball bouncing on the driveway across from mine. My phone was inside, charging on the kitchen counter, and I felt no urgency to retrieve it. I thought about what Minerva had said at dinner, that I was overreacting simply because she had cheated. The sentence had once made me furious because it turned my hurt into an inconvenience she expected me to manage.

Now I could see the moment more clearly. I had reacted badly in some ways. I'd said she had two hours to leave without understanding the legal process, and I'd been tempted to turn the whole dispute into a series of public jokes. I had been angry enough to imagine that the most satisfying outcome would be watching her lose everything she thought she had gained. But I had also corrected course, sought advice, protected my property through the proper channels, and refused to accept a relationship in which my consent was treated as optional.
