I was grateful for the acknowledgment, but it did not offer a path back to Julian. Gerald did not ask me to forgive him or explain that men made mistakes. He said he was sorry I had been hurt and that he hoped Julian would eventually hear what I was saying. When we stood to leave, he touched my shoulder gently and wished me a peaceful future, whether or not it included his family.

I cried in the car afterward. It was a quieter grief than the one I had felt on the island, because it concerned a family I had almost become part of rather than a husband I was separating from. I would miss some of Julian's relatives, the holiday dinners and the easy conversations at his parents' kitchen table. Ending a marriage also ends relationships with people who may never have hurt you, and no legal document can make that loss neat.

The next time I heard from Sofia, it was through a letter sent to the studio's business address. She said she had cooperated with Westbridge's review of the Ashford House presentation, provided emails relevant to the project's approval history and accepted the consequences of her own actions. She had asked to be removed from Julian's team and was considering leaving the company altogether. She apologized again for the affair and for the deliberate cruelty of appearing at the airport in white.

Her letter was not a demand for friendship. It was four pages of explanation and accountability, with no request that I reassure her. She wrote that Julian had been her superior, that she had worried about her career when he began acting as though their relationship was part of her role, and that she had still made choices she knew would injure another woman. She did not call herself innocent. That honesty allowed me to read the letter without feeling obligated to respond in the way she hoped.

I wrote a short reply acknowledging receipt. I told her that I hoped she found a workplace where she could build a career without confusing professional approval with intimacy, but that I did not want personal contact. It was not forgiveness, and it was not punishment. It was simply the distance I needed between my future and a person who had helped shape the worst week of my life.

Later I learned from Catherine Bell that Westbridge had completed its review and taken employment actions according to its policies. I did not receive details about Sofia's personnel file, and I did not ask for them. Julian remained employed for a time in a reduced role while an unrelated development team took over Ashford House. The company had corrected the investment materials and, after discussions with the relevant parties, decided to commission its design work through a separate competitive process.

Julian called me after receiving the final determination. "They're treating me like a liar," he said.
