“I’m sorry you were brought here under false assumptions. Nothing is being renovated. There is no authorization for work.”

Caroline’s face went pale.

“I absolutely understood Chloe to be authorized.”

“She is not.”

“I apologize.”

She packed her equipment quickly.

Chloe called Brenda.

My mother arrived forty-five minutes later.

To this day, I do not know how she made the drive that fast.

She came through the door without knocking.

“What did you do?”

I stood in the living room.

“Hello to you too.”

“You humiliated your sister.”

“She brought a contractor into my house to plan demolition.”

“It’s a wedding planner.”

“She was measuring walls.”

“For her wedding.”

“I did not authorize renovations.”

Brenda pointed at me.

“This is exactly what I warned everyone about.”

“What?”

“You using ownership as a weapon.”

“It is ownership.”

“You didn’t earn this house.”

That stopped me.

Maya’s expression changed.

I asked:

“What did you say?”

“You inherited it.”

“I spent half my childhood working here.”

“That doesn’t mean you bought it.”

“No. Grandpa did.”

“And Grandpa was sick.”

There it was.

The accusation expanded.

Brenda said Grandpa’s mind had been failing.

Chloe said I isolated him.

Brenda claimed I manipulated a dying man.

Chloe said I stole her birthright.

Ethan stood near the dining table looking increasingly horrified.

Then Brenda turned toward Maya.

“And you.”

Maya stiffened.

“You’re the one really benefiting from this.”

I stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Brenda ignored me.

“You spent your entire life with nothing, then you marry my son and suddenly you have a construction company and a million-dollar vacation home.”

Maya’s face went white.

“Brenda,” my father was not there to stop her, and Brenda knew it.

She continued.

“Gold diggers always pretend they don’t care about money until the paperwork is signed.”

I moved between them.

“Get out.”

Brenda laughed.

“This is my father’s house.”

“No. It was your father’s house.”

I pointed at the door.

“Now it is mine.”

Chloe screamed.

“You can’t ban us.”

“I can.”

“You’re insane.”

“If you do not leave, I will call the county sheriff.”

Brenda stepped close enough that I could smell her perfume.

“If you do this, you are dead to me.”

I looked at Maya.

Her eyes were wet.

Then I looked back at my mother.

“Leave.”

They did.

Chloe filmed herself from Ethan’s passenger seat before they reached the highway.

The video appeared on Facebook that evening.

Her face was tear-streaked.

Her voice trembled.

She described me as her wealthy older brother who had “seized control of the family estate.”

She said I had revoked her wedding venue out of spite.

She claimed I had screamed at her.

She did not mention the planned demolition.

She did not mention Grandpa’s will.

She did not mention the $95,000 she inherited.
