Then he cheated on me, left me for my own sister, married her, and silently watched her spend years agonizing, crying, and pumping her body full of painful hormones, genuinely believing her body was failing her, all while he knew it was physically impossible for him to get her pregnant. I asked Sarah, my voice barely a whisper, why the hell he had done it. Sarah looked sick to her stomach. She said Chloe told her that Greg had completely panicked after becoming a father to Leo.
He felt trapped, financially overwhelmed, and absolutely certain he never ever wanted the burden of another child. He hadn't told me because he knew I wanted more kids, and he was terrified I might leave him if I found out he took the choice away. He didn't tell Chloe before they got married because he knew having children was her biggest dream, and he was afraid she'd dump him if she knew the truth.
There it was. It wasn't some evil mastermind Machiavellian plan. It was just pathetic naked cowardice stacked on top of cowardice until it morphed into a monstrous lie that consumed somebody else's entire life.
"How long has she known?" I asked, my voice finally steadying. "A few weeks," Sarah whispered. I took a sip of my cold coffee. "And does my mother know?" Sarah looked down at her lap, unable to meet my eyes.
"Yes." Chloe told her immediately. I laughed. I laughed once quietly, but so sharply that a woman at the next table turned to look at us. Because if I hadn't laughed, I might have stood up and started screaming right there in the middle of the restaurant.
My mother had spent the last several months relentlessly accusing me of maliciously tormenting my sister just for being pregnant. She had called me cruel. She had called me insensitive.
She had ruined my announcement. And now that she fully knew the truth that Chloe's husband was a lying sociopath who had orchestrated her infertility trauma, my mother still hadn't corrected a single thing she'd said about me. She was still letting me be the villain.
"Why are you telling me this, Sarah?" I asked. Sarah teared up. She said she had gone back and forth about it for days, losing sleep, but she couldn't stand idly by and watch my entire family continue to frame me as a cruel monster when the situation was so much more twisted. Chloe had told her in strict confidence, and Sarah knew she was technically betraying her friend by telling me.
She looked genuinely guilty. I looked at her softly and told her I honestly wasn't sure whether to thank her for the truth or wish she had let me live in ignorant bliss. "That's fair," she said quietly.
On the drive home, I had to pull my car into an empty Target parking lot because I was crying so hard my vision blurred. It wasn't because I suddenly wanted revenge. I wasn't even entirely sure who I was crying for. Myself, maybe because the secret vasectomy meant my first marriage had contained yet another massive foundational lie that I had been entirely blind to.
