I called Chloe the next morning after Greg had packed a duffel bag and left to stay at a friend's house. She started crying hysterically before I even finished asking my first question. She sobbed that she loved him. She swore they hadn't planned it.

She claimed she had desperately tried to stay away, but the pull was too strong. She used the classic line, "Feelings don't follow rules, Elena." I gripped the phone and told her in a dead, flat voice that sleeping with your sister's husband in a hotel room wasn't a feeling. It was a series of calculated, deliberate choices. She just cried harder, making those loud, gasping sounds she always used as a teenager to get out of trouble.

I hung up on her. 20 minutes later, my mother called. To this day, I still don't know whether Chloe called her first or if Greg did, but somehow my mother already had a fully formed, elaborate explanation and defense ready to deploy. She immediately told me that Chloe was devastated and having a panic attack. She said nobody had ever wanted to hurt me.

She then had the absolute audacity to say that my marriage had obviously been struggling for a long time and that I needed to stop acting as if Chloe had single-handedly destroyed a perfect happy home. I felt the room spin. I hadn't said my marriage was perfect. I had said my sister slept with my husband.

Those are not the same sentence. I asked my mother, my voice trembling with rage, whether she was seriously defending the woman who had just blown up my life. My mother sighed, her martyr sigh.

"I am trying to be fair to everyone. Elena, you're being very hostile." That was the exact day I finally truly understood the sick dynamic of my family. In my family, fair simply meant doing whatever mental gymnastics were necessary to make sure Chloe never ever had to carry the full crushing weight of the consequences of her own actions.

I didn't dramatically throw Greg's clothes out a second story window. I didn't take a knife and slash his car tires. I didn't do anything satisfying enough to make for some crazy viral payback story. Instead, I quietly found a ruthless family lawyer because I had a young child, zero current income, and I was absolutely terrified of ending up on the street.

I sat in the lawyer's plush office and cried so hard during our initial consultation that the stern older woman had to stop taking notes, walk around her desk, and hand me a box of tissues. Then, I immediately apologized to her for crying, which tells you absolutely everything you need to know about who I was back then. A chronic people pleaser apologizing for bleeding after being stabbed. Greg agreed to the divorce terms far faster than I ever expected.

He desperately wanted to look like the reasonable good guy to our mutual friends. He easily agreed that Leo would live mainly with me, that he would have every other weekend visits, and that he would pay a generous amount of child and spousal support. He didn't fight me over keeping the living room furniture, the TV, or the reliable Honda.

At the time, I naively thought maybe his crushing guilt had made him unusually generous. Later, I realized the cold truth. He mostly just wanted the legal process finished as fast as possible so he could publicly move on with his shiny new life.
