She looked at the coffee cups. Daniel had made hers the way she liked it, with a little milk added before he poured the coffee, so there would be no pale streak across the surface. The detail broke something in her that the documents had not. He still remembered the small things after all the large things had been destroyed, and she had been too busy managing two lives to notice how he was carrying one alone.

"I loved you," she said.

"I know."

"I still do."

He did not say the words back. "I cannot tell you what you feel, Claire. I can tell you what your choices have done to the people who depended on you."

She flinched when he said people. Until that moment, the affair had existed in her mind primarily as a problem between adults, a secret that might hurt Daniel but that she had tried to keep outside her relationship with Sophie. The two worlds had never truly been separate. Daniel could see her understanding that as he reached for the last page in the folder.

It was a proposed temporary parenting arrangement, nothing more than a starting point. Sophie would remain in the family home while the adults worked out a schedule, and both parents would continue sharing essential school and medical information. The document did not accuse Claire of being unfit or ask to prevent her from seeing her daughter. Its careful language made the situation more painful, because it showed that Daniel had considered Sophie's needs while preparing to leave his marriage.

"You have already decided what happens to Sophie?" Claire asked, alarmed.

"No. We will have to decide together, and if we cannot, we will need help making a fair arrangement. I am not going to turn her into a prize."

"She is my daughter too."

"I know she is. I have never forgotten it."

Claire sat back. She had been ready to fight if he accused her of being a terrible mother, because anger was easier than the truth. Instead, he acknowledged her place in Sophie's life without surrendering his right to leave. She found herself wishing he would say something cruel enough that she could make it the central fact of the evening.

"Does she know?" Claire asked.

"She knows we have been unhappy. She has known that for a long time. She does not know about Evan, and I do not intend to tell her details she should not have to carry."

"You talked to her behind my back?"

"I talked to her school counselor about how to keep this from hurting her more than it has to. The counselor advised me to speak with you first. This is me doing that."

Claire looked at the folder again. There were no angry letters, no threats to send the photographs to her employer, no demand that she confess to her parents. She had spent years thinking Daniel's calm was weakness. Now she understood it could also be a boundary that had taken him a long time to reach.
