On Sunday she returned carrying maple candy for Sophie and a small bottle of olive oil for Daniel. He thanked her, asked whether the workshop had gone well, and listened when she described a session on corporate hospitality. She supplied enough details to make the account convincing, drawing on a real seminar she had attended a year earlier. Daniel looked tired, and for a moment she wanted him to accuse her so that she could finally stop performing. He asked instead whether she could make it to the school meeting on Tuesday.

"Of course," she said. "Put it on my calendar."

The meeting was at six thirty. Evan sent a message at six twelve saying a prospective client had invited them to dinner, and Claire chose the dinner. She texted Daniel that she had been pulled into a last-minute work obligation. Sophie attended the meeting with her father, then sat quietly in the back seat afterward as he drove them home.

For months, Daniel experienced the failure of promises as isolated disappointments. He did not know they belonged to a larger pattern, though he was beginning to suspect. He saw an unfamiliar man's name appear repeatedly on Claire's phone when it lit up on the kitchen island, but he did not open her messages. He told himself that checking would make him a person he had never wanted to become.

One night he asked whether she was seeing someone else. He chose the moment carefully, after Sophie had gone to bed and before Claire left for an evening reception. Claire stood by the bathroom mirror fastening an earring and stared at his reflection as if she did not recognize him.

"Are you serious?" she said.

"I am asking because I need an honest answer."

"You cannot be serious, Daniel. I work with men. I talk to men. Am I supposed to stop having a career because you are insecure?"

"That was not what I asked."

"Then stop asking questions that turn me into somebody I am not."

He apologized, because the conversation had quickly become about his character rather than her answer. She left for the reception ten minutes later, crying with anger that felt real even though she knew exactly what she was concealing. Evan took her to a bar after the event, and she told him Daniel was becoming controlling. Evan squeezed her hand and said she deserved a partner who trusted her.

Claire believed him because the alternative required looking closely at herself. She did not consider the peculiar convenience of a man who benefited from her deception advising her to treat questions about it as abuse. When she returned at two forty-five, Daniel was awake but did not speak. She lay beside him and imagined that silence was the end of the matter.

The next year brought changes that made the separation between their lives more visible. Claire began dressing for evening events with particular care, wearing perfume Daniel remembered giving her years earlier, then leaving without looking to see whether he noticed. She used affectionate nicknames with Evan that had once belonged to her husband. Her public photographs from work showed a woman smiling beneath chandeliers and beside polished tables, while the family albums at home grew thin.
