Saturday night.

Friends.

Neighbors.

Food.

Ryan came because I told Daniel we had reconnected through the alumni group and it would be strange to exclude him.

Daniel barely reacted.

“Fine.”

That should have worried me.

Instead, I thought I was getting better at lying.

Ryan arrived around six.

He brought whiskey.

Daniel normally drank beer.

Ryan kept pouring.

“You still drink like a college freshman,” he joked.

Daniel smiled.

Had a glass.

Then another.

Or so I thought.

By nine-thirty, Daniel seemed unusually drunk.

Speech slower.

Eyes heavy.

He dropped a bottle cap.

Nearly missed the trash can.

Ryan and I exchanged a glance.

I hate remembering that glance.

Two people confirming a plan without words.

By eleven, most guests had left.

Chloe was supposedly sleeping at Daniel’s sister Grace’s house because she had gone there earlier for a movie night with her cousin.

I considered that convenient.

I had no idea Daniel had arranged it days earlier.

Ryan stayed behind.

Daniel sat on the sofa.

Head tilted back.

Eyes closed.

I whispered:

“Daniel?”

Nothing.

Ryan waved a hand in front of his face.

No reaction.

Then quietly:

“Told you.”

I should have asked what he meant by that.

Instead, we waited another fifteen minutes.

Then went upstairs.

Kendra Cooper climbed the staircase slowly.

She stopped on the landing.

Ryan stared at her.

“Kendra?”

She looked at him as though she no longer recognized the person saying her name.

Behind her appeared my sister Melissa.

Then my mother.

Then Daniel’s sister Grace.

My knees weakened.

“What is this?”

Daniel answered:

“Witnesses.”

My mother looked at me.

Not angry.

That would have been easier.

She looked devastated.

“Alyssa.”

I said:

“Mom, please.”

Melissa folded her arms.

“No.”

“Not yet.”

Ryan looked toward Kendra.

“We’re separated.”

Kendra laughed.

It was one of the saddest sounds I had ever heard.

“Are we?”

“Kendra—”

“Because we went to marriage counseling Tuesday.”

Ryan said nothing.

She continued:

“You slept in our bed Wednesday.”

My entire body went cold.

I looked at him.

“You told me she moved out.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“This isn’t the time.”

Kendra stared at me.

“No.”

“It actually is.”

I turned toward Ryan.

“You said you were filing.”

He whispered:

“Keep your voice down.”

Kendra almost laughed again.

“Now he wants privacy.”

Daniel walked past us.

He opened the bedroom door wider.

Then pointed toward the small black device.

“It’s an audio recorder.”

I stared at him.

“You recorded us?”

“I recorded the upstairs landing and the open doorway after Ryan came up.”

He looked at both of us.

“I did not put a camera inside the bedroom.”

Then he pointed toward the hallway.

“The security camera on the landing caught him entering.”

“Everyone downstairs watched that feed after he came up.”

My mother looked away.

Daniel continued:

“And because you left the bedroom door open while discussing how unconscious I supposedly was, the audio didn’t require much interpretation.”

Ryan’s face reddened.

“You set us up.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

“You came into my house.”

“You walked upstairs.”

“You kissed my wife.”

“You discussed sleeping with her while assuming I was unconscious.”

“I didn’t make any of those decisions for you.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“This is insane.”

Kendra raised the tablet.

“You want to talk about insane?”

He stopped.

She unlocked it.

Then looked at Daniel.

“Play them?”

Daniel nodded.

That was when I realized the affair was not the thing he had been waiting to expose.

It was only the first layer.

Kendra had discovered Ryan’s messages three weeks earlier.

Not by hacking him.

Their household tablet was synced to his account.

A notification appeared while she was using it.

My name was not visible.

Only initials.

A.B.

The first message she opened was innocent enough.

The next was not.

She kept reading.

Then took screenshots.

At first, she thought Ryan was simply cheating.

Then she saw my photograph.

Our house in the background.

Kendra recognized Daniel from the alumni fundraiser.

She contacted him.

Daniel told her later he initially believed the message was a prank.

Then she sent screenshots.

Ryan:

She’s almost ready to leave him.

Another:

Biggest issue is Chloe. She thinks Daniel will fight for equal time.

Then:

He drinks. We can use that.

My mouth went dry.

Kendra read aloud.

I remembered the conversation.

I had not remembered the words being that ugly.

Then another message.

Ryan to me:

At the barbecue, keep refilling him. If he goes down early, take a picture. One good image beats ten arguments.

My mother made a small sound.

I closed my eyes.

Daniel said nothing.

Kendra continued.

My reply:

I don’t want to make him look dangerous.

Ryan:

Then don’t. Just unreliable.

Then me:

He’s never been irresponsible with Chloe.

Ryan:

You’re thinking emotionally. Courts care about patterns. Family does too.

Melissa looked at me.

“You told me he was drinking every night.”

I whispered:

“Not every night.”

“You said most nights.”

“I exaggerated.”

My mother stared.

“Why?”

I could not answer.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Because she was preparing everyone to interpret tonight a certain way.”

My eyes filled.

“Daniel—”

“No.”

His voice remained quiet.

“I need you to hear this without interrupting.”

He looked toward the people on the stairs.

“For three weeks, Alyssa’s mother and sister have believed I may have a drinking problem.”

“They believed it because she told them.”

Melissa looked ashamed now too.

Daniel continued:

“Kendra showed me messages suggesting Ryan wanted tonight to become proof.”

“So I stopped drinking.”

I stared at him.

He nodded toward the bottles downstairs.

“The first beer was real.”

“Everything after that was nonalcoholic.”

Ryan blinked.

“What?”

Daniel looked at him.

“You kept filling my glass from the whiskey bottle.”

“I kept pouring it into the plant beside the back step when nobody was looking.”

Grace covered her mouth, almost hiding a smile despite the situation.

Daniel continued:

“I wasn’t passed out.”

“I was waiting.”

I asked:

“For us?”

“For the truth.”

There was still one thing I did not understand.

“Why bring them here?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because if I confronted you alone, what would happen tomorrow?”
