My wife smirked at me in our kitchen in Newark, New Jersey, like she had already won an argument I had not even started. She leaned against the counter with her phone in one hand and her car keys in the other, wearing the red dress I had bought for our fifth anniversary.

Outside, our porch light shone across the narrow driveway, and the small American flag beside our mailbox twisted in the October wind. Inside, the pasta I had spent forty minutes making sat untouched on the stove.

"I'm going clubbing with my ex, Daniel," Vanessa said. "If you don't approve, we can call it quits."

Instead I set down the dishtowel I'd been holding and turned the burner off beneath the sauce.

"You're seriously not going to say anything?" she asked.

"You told me what you've decided. I heard you."

"So you're fine with it?"

"I didn't say I was fine with it."

Vanessa gave a short, irritated laugh. "You know what? I'm not doing this tonight. Adrian and I have known each other since college. It's one night out. Normal people don't act like this is a crime."

Adrian Voss. Hearing his name spoken aloud was almost a relief, because for months I had been watching it appear and disappear around the edges of our marriage. I had asked about the late calls and the bright expression that crossed her face when
