The first snow arrived before Thanksgiving. It came early, wet and uncertain, melting as soon as it touched the asphalt and gathering only along the edges of roofs. Ethan's son stood at the kitchen window celebrating each flake, while I drank coffee and watched a familiar kind of November morning unfold in an unfamiliar house. Mara had invited me to join their holiday dinner, and my father had insisted I spend the day after Thanksgiving with him. For the first time in years, my calendar was full of plans I had not made to accommodate Vanessa.

That didn't mean I was happy. Holidays gave memories a sharper outline. At the grocery store, I reached automatically for the cranberry sauce she liked, then put the jar back. At a stoplight, I saw a couple arguing over directions in the car beside me and felt an irrational envy that they could still fight about something ordinary. A separation isn't a straight road from misery to freedom; sometimes you are doing better at breakfast and grieving again by lunch.

Vanessa sent me a message the night before Thanksgiving. It was longer than her earlier apologies, and it didn't contain a demand that I return. She wrote that she had started seeing a therapist on her own. She said she had begun examining the way she treated admiration like something she needed constantly, and how frightened she felt when life became quiet enough to hear her own doubts. She said she was not asking me to believe she'd changed in three weeks.

I read the message twice. It hurt more than the angry messages because it sounded like the woman I had hoped to reach back in the summer. I wrote that I was glad she was getting help and that I wished her a peaceful holiday. She replied with a simple thank-you, and for once we left the conversation there.

I later learned that Adrian had called her again after she'd admitted the kiss to me. He wanted her to attend a private launch at a new venue in Manhattan. She told him she couldn't keep spending time with him while trying to understand the damage she'd done. According to Vanessa, he laughed and asked whether Daniel had finally made her choose. She said no one was making her choose; she was trying to behave like an adult.

"We were just having fun," Adrian told her. "I didn't ask you to blow up your marriage."

She repeated those words to me weeks later, without asking for sympathy. They had embarrassed her, she said, because he'd managed to state something true while avoiding responsibility for his own part. He hadn't made the vows at our wedding. He hadn't insisted she dress up and provoke me with an ultimatum. Adrian had enjoyed the attention and contributed to the secrecy, but Vanessa had been the person standing in our kitchen with the keys in her hand.
