I listened to it twice. There was no apology. No acknowledgment that I had expressly refused the arrangement she'd chosen. She spoke as though the previous ten days had been an inconvenient disagreement over vacation dates. The familiar suggestion that I needed to calm down made me put the phone on the counter and walk outside. I stood on the patio until the autumn air had cooled my face.

I thought I would be angry. Instead, I felt a sadness so clear that it seemed to have edges. The woman who would come home tomorrow still didn't understand why I'd stopped waiting for her. She might never understand. And I was finally beginning to accept that understanding wasn't a condition of my decision.

On Monday morning, I drove downtown to Leah's office before work. I signed the final documents she needed. She explained that the divorce complaint would be filed and that Natalie would receive formal service through the proper channels. The file-stamped copy I asked to take home was for her information, not a substitute for official notice. Leah studied my face as I slipped it into my briefcase.

“Please don't turn the conversation into a trial,” she said. “You don't have to win an argument in your living room. You have already made your choice.”

“I'll try.”

“And if it gets heated, you can end the conversation. Both of you have rights regarding the house. Don't lock her out or threaten to throw her belongings away.”

“I understand.”

I stopped at the office on the way home. Ryan wasn't there. Priya said he'd canceled his morning meetings and asked whether I'd found time to review the Westbridge proposal. I told her the proposal could wait another day and asked her to preserve all original expense records. She nodded without comment. As I was leaving, she looked up from her computer and said, “You don't have to tell me why you're being careful. Just don't forget that careful and alone aren't the same thing.”

At home I changed out of my work clothes, straightened the living room, and placed the divorce folder on the coffee table. The wedding photograph was in the guest room closet. I'd shifted a few books on the shelves because I wanted to stop seeing Natalie's favorites arranged around mine like a memorial to a relationship that technically still existed. There was nothing theatrical about the room. No scattered belongings, no threats written on a mirror, no lock changed on the door. The house looked like a man lived there, and that was enough.

At three seventeen, a car door slammed outside.

I heard the suitcase wheels before Natalie turned her key. I picked up a book I'd been meaning to read and sat down on the couch, mostly because I didn't know what else to do with my hands. The front door opened. She stepped inside wearing an emerald-green blouse and a black leather skirt, her dark hair brushed smooth, a confident smile already forming on her face. She called, “Daniel?” in the playful voice she used when returning from a business trip. Then she saw the empty space on the wall.

She looked at the bookshelves. At the untouched suitcase beside her feet. At the folder on the coffee table.

“What the hell is this?”

I looked up. “You made your choice.”

The scene unfolded almost exactly as it had in the nightmares I'd been having, except her anger was louder and I was calmer. She slammed her hand on the papers, insisted I couldn't do this, and demanded to know whether I understood what twelve years meant. I told her I understood better than she did if she believed eleven days with other men were worth gambling them away. When she pointed out that I had not even heard what she'd learned during her time away, I said I wasn't interested in being evaluated against candidates I hadn't agreed to compete with.

“You didn't even ask whether I did anything,” she said.
