A sad smile touched her mouth.

"Like I was about to become somebody extraordinary."

I looked down at the photograph between us.

"I thought you already were."

Claire began to cry.

The sentence had not been intended as punishment.

Maybe that was why it hurt her.

"I know," she whispered. "That's what I couldn't see."

We sat on the closet floor surrounded by photographs of people we no longer knew how to be.

Then Claire said something I had waited months to hear and no longer needed.

"I was having an affair."

I looked up.

She wiped her face.

"Not in Miami. I told you the truth about that part. We didn't sleep together there. But before the trip... twice."

The room became very still.

I felt the words enter my body almost physically.

For a few seconds, I heard nothing except the hum of the air conditioner.

"When?"

"February. And once in March."

I nodded slowly.

Those months matched nights she said she was at late donor events.

"At his apartment?"

"Yes."

I looked toward the boxes.

"Why tell me now?"

"Because the divorce is almost done, and I don't want the last thing I give you to be another edited version."

I breathed through my nose.

"Did you plan to tell me after Miami?"

"I don't know."

"That's not true."

She closed her eyes.

"No. I didn't plan to tell you."

I stood because sitting near her had become impossible.

Claire stayed on the floor.

"I'm sorry."

I walked into the bedroom and stared at the empty wall where our wedding photograph had once hung.

For months I had told myself the physical detail did not matter because the emotional betrayal was enough.

I believed that.

And still, knowing hurt differently.

Claire appeared in the doorway but did not come closer.

"Nathan, I know saying sorry doesn't..."

I held up one hand.

She stopped.

"I need five minutes."

She nodded and went downstairs.

I stood alone in the bedroom where she had packed the black lace nightgown.

The memory returned with brutal clarity.
