So I did something that felt almost comically ordinary considering the way my hands were shaking.

I called a lawyer.

Rachel Brenner had handled the closing on our house years earlier before moving into family and business litigation. I remembered her because she had been the only person at the closing table who explained documents without making me feel stupid for asking what they meant.

Her assistant found me a late appointment.

At four-thirty, I sat across from Rachel in a conference room with my phone, a notebook, and no proof of anything except a public corporate filing and Nina's warning.

I told her about Miami first because that was the part I understood emotionally.

Then I told her about Nina.

Rachel listened without interrupting. When I finished, she folded her hands over a yellow pad and asked a question I had not expected.

"What outcome are you trying to create?"

I stared at her. "I don't know."

"That's honest. Try again."

I looked toward the window. "I don't want to be lied to anymore."

"Good. That's a personal goal. What legal outcome do you want?"

"If Claire is having an affair, I think the marriage is over."

"Think or know?"

I swallowed. "I think I already know."

Rachel nodded once. "Then let's separate that from the Harbor House issue. If there is an internal financial investigation, do not insert yourself into it. Do not confront Claire with confidential details you cannot verify. Do not remove organizational records from your home unless an attorney tells you to preserve something lawfully in your possession. Do not access her work systems."

"I wasn't planning to."

"People do strange things when they are hurt. I'm telling you now so you can remember later that somebody told you not to."

She asked about our bank accounts, debts, property, insurance, retirement accounts, and household expenses. She asked whether Claire had made unusual transfers from joint funds. I told her about several payments I had noticed but had not understood.

Three months earlier, Claire moved nine thousand dollars from our joint savings to her personal account. She said she needed the money temporarily for a credit-card balance created by travel expenses that Harbor House would reimburse.

The money never came back.

A month later, another four thousand dollars moved.

Then two thousand eight hundred.

Each transfer had an explanation. Conference deposits. Reimbursable hotel charges. A professional certification. Expenses connected to a program launch.

I had accepted all of them because married people do not usually audit one another.

Rachel wrote the amounts down.

"Do you have statements?"

"Joint statements, yes."

"Bring copies. Do not move money except your own income without discussing it with me first. If she leaves for Miami and you want to separate, we can document what you take from the house and what you leave."

I rubbed both palms over my face. "I feel ridiculous."

"Why?"

"Because three days ago I thought my problem was that my wife might sleep with her trainer. Now I'm sitting here talking about nonprofit money."

Rachel's expression softened slightly. "You are not required to process every betrayal at the same speed."

That sentence stayed with me.

I drove home slowly.

Claire was already there, cooking pasta and talking through wireless earbuds. She held up one finger when I entered, signaling that I should wait, then turned toward the stove.

"No, I agree," she said into the call. "Miami needs to feel like a reset, not just another meeting. If we're doing this, we need people to understand the scale."

She laughed.

"Exactly. Bigger."

I stood in the doorway and listened for less than ten seconds before she noticed me.

Her expression tightened.

"I've got to go," she said. "I'll call you later."

She ended the call.

"Adrian?" I asked.

"Yes."

I nodded.
