Coat.

Perfume.

Phone.

Keys.

I asked her to stay.

She refused.

Then:

“Don’t like it? Divorce me.”

And I said:

“Okay.”

Once Vanessa’s car disappeared, I texted Renee.

We’re already here.

So is our friend.

I finally understood.

Tessa.

It had to be Tessa.

I went upstairs.

Lily lay beneath her unicorn blanket.

Her face was pink from fever.

I replaced the cool washcloth on her forehead.

Her eyes opened.

“Daddy?”

“Right here.”

“Where’s Mommy?”

My chest tightened.

“She had to go out.”

“Why?”

There was no answer a six-year-old needed.

“So I’m staying with you.”

She reached out.

I gave her my hand.

She wrapped two small fingers around mine.

Then fell asleep.

I watched the digital clock.

11:50.

11:58.

12:03.

12:08.

At 12:09 my phone vibrated.

Vanessa.

I declined it.

Again.

Declined.

Again.

I put the phone on silent.

Her name flashed across the dark screen.

Eleven calls in four minutes.

Then messages.

Caleb pick up.

Please.

Please answer.

I need to explain.

This isn’t what it looks like.

Please please please please please.

I looked at Lily.

She was still holding my fingers.

I did not answer.

Not because I wanted Vanessa to suffer.

There are moments when silence is revenge.

That was not one of them.

I simply had nothing to say that mattered more than being beside my daughter.

I learned what happened at Copper Room afterward.

First from Renee.

Then Tessa.

Later from a video Renee’s sister had recorded from the bar because Renee wanted a witness if the confrontation became ugly.

I watched the video once.

Exactly once.

Vanessa entered the club just before midnight.

Grant sat in a corner booth.

Two drinks waiting.

Vanessa slid beside him.

Kissed him.

According to Tessa, Vanessa laughed about my reaction in the hallway.

“He just said okay.”

Grant grinned.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

“He’s finally giving up.”

Vanessa apparently laughed.

“He looked like a dog that got told to stay.”

Then a woman approached the booth.

Pregnant.

Navy dress.

Manila folder.

Renee sat down across from them.

Grant went pale.

Vanessa looked irritated.

“Sorry, this table is taken.”

Renee smiled.

“I know.”

Then:

“It’s been taken for eight years.”

Vanessa looked at Grant.
