Renee continued.
“I’m his wife.”
For several seconds, Vanessa did not speak.
Then she stared at Grant.
“You told me you were separated.”
Grant opened his mouth.
Renee placed an ultrasound photograph on the table.
“You told her you were sleeping on the couch?”
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
Renee said:
“He must have wandered off the couch at some point.”
Tessa told me later she almost laughed.
Almost.
Vanessa turned on Grant.
“You said the pregnancy wasn’t yours.”
That detail was new to me.
Renee’s face changed.
Grant said:
“Vanessa, don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Not here.”
Renee opened the folder.
Hotel receipts.
Screenshots.
Dates.
Messages.
The house comment.
Then the photograph from the steakhouse.
Vanessa grabbed it.
“Where did you get this?”
Renee looked past her.
Tessa stepped out from behind the neighboring table.
Vanessa froze.
“Tessa?”
Tessa walked closer.
“You used me.”
Vanessa’s face changed from confusion to anger.
“What?”
“You told Caleb you were with me.”
“I was with you.”
“For an hour.”
“Tessa.”
“Then you left to sleep with him.”
“Lower your voice.”
That was classic Vanessa.
Even while being exposed in a public club, she was worried about appearance.
Tessa shook her head.
“You know what the worst part of my divorce was?”
Vanessa stared.
“Not finding out my husband cheated.”
Tessa’s voice broke.
“It was finding out my friends knew.”
Vanessa looked around.
“Tessa, please.”
“I became one of those friends.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I begged you to stop.”
Vanessa whispered something.
Tessa stepped closer.
“You told me I owed you because you let me stay at your house.”
Renee looked at her.
Tessa continued.
“You used my divorce as cover for your affair.”
Vanessa’s face went white.
“You took the photo?”
“Yes.”
“You sent it to Caleb?”
“Yes.”
“And her?”
Tessa looked at Renee.
“Yes.”
Vanessa stared at her best friend.
“Why?”
Tessa’s eyes filled.
“Because both of them deserved the truth more than you deserved protection.”
Vanessa grabbed her phone.
She went toward the restroom.
That was when she called me eleven times.
Grant stayed at the table.
Renee told him she had already consulted a lawyer.
She had preserved copies of relevant records.
She had notified his employer about the undisclosed relationship because Grant supervised Vanessa and had participated in employment decisions affecting her.
Renee had also taken lawful steps, with counsel, to protect inherited assets that were separately traceable to her family rather than secretly draining ordinary marital funds.
Grant apparently kept saying:
“Can we discuss this at home?”
Renee said:
“No.”
Then she left.
At 1:15, headlights crossed Lily’s ceiling.
Her fever had come down slightly.
She was sleeping more comfortably.
I heard the front door.
