“This old man is clearly causing trouble, and all that evidence is fake. I won’t let him continue to cause a scene here. Someone call the police right now.” Steven’s words only heightened the tension. Some customers quickly backed away toward the doors, trying to keep a safe distance from Elijah as if he were the threat, while others stood frozen, their eyes wide at the sudden escalation.
They did not know whether to believe the truth Elijah had revealed or to trust the authority represented by Steven’s uniform. Elijah stood still, unafraid of the guard’s threatening posture. He simply looked at Steven with deep, compassionate eyes, the eyes of someone who had endured countless injustices and was now watching the same pattern unfold again. “Mr. Miller,” Elijah said gently but firmly, “I’m not causing trouble. I’m bringing the truth to light.”
“Do you think it is right to hide a crime for more than fifty years?” Steven faltered for a moment, but quickly covered it by gripping his gun holster tighter. His impatience and unease became more apparent. He looked around the lobby as if searching for support from the customers, but all he found were confused, evasive, and skeptical looks.
That only made him angrier. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, and I don’t care,” Steven snapped in a harsh, challenging tone. “What I know for sure is that you’ve turned everything upside down here, and you’re going to answer for it. Sit still until the police arrive.” James Temp finally lifted his head from the papers he had been clutching.
His face was pale and dazed, the professional composure of the bank manager nearly gone. He stood unsteadily and walked toward Steven, his voice weak at first as he tried to salvage the situation. “Steven, wait. We need to stay calm. I think we should check these documents carefully before doing anything else. This is not as simple a situation as you think.”
Steven turned on him, his eyes filled with disappointment and anger. To Steven, it was almost incomprehensible that the manager he had always viewed as a reliable superior would show doubt in the face of a stranger like Elijah. “What are you talking about, James?” Steven yelled, his voice almost out of control. “Are you believing this old man’s lies? Are you just going to stand by and let him destroy the reputation of our bank and ruin the jobs and lives of everyone here?”
The entire lobby went silent at Steven’s sharp words. Temp stood frozen, unable to respond immediately, while customers edged closer to the exit. Elijah remained calm and resolute, his gaze fixed on Steven as if to make clear that the truth would not be obscured by weapons or power this time. Everyone was waiting for the police to arrive, but they also knew that whoever came through those doors would have to confront a historical claim supported by evidence that could not be casually dismissed.
When Steven’s threat ended, every eye in the vast lobby shifted toward James Temp. People waited for a clear response, a decisive action from the manager who was usually calm and confident in handling any situation. This time James looked pale, confused, and lost. He had never imagined that one day he would face such a complicated and painful decision.
